There has just been an article on the news saying that the top 10 in the music charts will be made up of one Coldplay song and nine Ed Sheeran ones!

Apparently, artists no longer have to release any physical media that people need to go and buy and that the charts can be comprised of songs that are merely streamed. As millions of soppy twats have been listening to Ed's new album online we get this ridiculous situation...

Never mind that - it's the appearance of the name Coldplay (a really stupid name, to my mind) that offends...

I was listening to some Ed Sheeran stats on the radio into work (it was talked about on LBC) yesterday and, to be fair, the majority of his recent album sales have been on physical media (63%) not digital download so it's not solely driven by online (although he did break all records there as well)!

From what little I've heard of Ed Sheeran's music I consider this to be a crime

Although that's overshadowed by Coldplay appearing in the list.

Not Sheeran, though, particularly.

I'm not afraid to admit to liking Coldplay as well.  I don't listen to them much at all theses days, but I've seen them live a couple of time and they do put on a great show.   Hating Coldplay seems to be a popular thing to do, not sure why.  I understand why people wouldn't like their music (or Chris Martin), that's fair enough, but I don't understand why there is so much strength of feeling.

I like a couple of Ed Sheerans tracks as well, but not many.

I think the Coldplay hate came about from the Chris Martin/Gwyneth Paltrow thing and the bullshit they spouted, as well as Coldplay being in on every single charidee record they could. A lot of people like their rockers to at least have a phase of being a 'bottle of Jack & pound of coke a day' type.

I like some tracks of each of them, but I fucking hate rapping, so listening to a whole Sheeran album (which my wife & daughter like to do) is like nails down a blackboard.

I hated Coldplay before it was fashionable to do so.

I used to like Coldplay and don't now dislike them because it's the thing to do, but because their music is shit. The first album was good and most of X&Y, too, but everything else is pretty unpalatable to my hearing holes.

Ed Sheeran is a very talented guy and althou6gh I'm not his biggest fan I do like a number of his songs. He's number 1 worldwide on Spotify which is hugely impressive. Surely taking songs played rather than bought is a better way of choosing a number 1

I've never understood the whole Coldplay thing. They're little more than MOR supermarket inoffensiveness. How they became so big is utterly beyond my comprehension. They look average, they act boring, their style is stolid and their music is uninspiring aside from 2 or 3 big ones (Paradise, Clocks er..... that's it).

You all probably think the same about Duran Duran but they are clearly the best band to have ever existed.

Coldplay make music for people who don't really like music. It's bland, inoffensive, beige, coffee table background drone for pretentious wannabe middle-class dinner parties. Musical tofu.

At least Ed Sheeran is interesting in his choice of styles. Not my cup of darjeeling by a long chalk, but I doff my cap to him for at least being a songwriter in a world of talent show puppets.

How can anyone be a Modern day Duran Duran when they are still producing new material? They're still modern.

Exactly. The Top 40 they used to feature on TOTP was a singles chart based on sales, but now some ginger twat can say that all of the tracks on his album are singles as well as album tracks and then when people with no musical taste listen to said album on Spotify all the tracks on it go into the top 10!

Stoopid!

It's now 15 songs in the top 15 apparently.

The rules are that 150 streams counts the same as one physical sale, so that means that the fans are going on Spotify and just listening to the album on repeat to effectively rig the charts.

Or they could be listening repeatedly because they like the music....

It's a bit of a daft system, but the one interesting fact I heard yesterday was that it's sold the most copies on vinyl in the last 20 years.

Do the charts even matter any more? - in the 70's and 80's you always knew who was number 1 - I haven't been aware for years now - and before anyone says anything about my age, neither are my daughters or granddaughter interested or even aware who's number 1.

I don't think I ever really cared about the charts. I remember Bryan Adams being number 1 for what felt like 7 years back in 1991, but I've never particularly listened to the charts. I gravitated away from pop music at around age 10/11 when I began to realise that popularity is not necessarily a gauge of quality.

I've got 16 and 18 year old sons, both of who are very into music.

They have no idea who is where in the charts so I'd suggest it's a meaningless thing nowadays,

I was also introduced to Guns N Roses at the age of 6, so it was all downhill from there.

It's earplugs I need. And for music "fans" to get themselves some imagination...

I'm just glad the other fat ginge doesn't have her album on Spotify. Imagine what the charts would look like if it was.
