Unfortunately, it looks like Alpine recruited the designer of the Cayman and said " go on, you can have a bit more design freedom" but 20 odd years of Porsche indoctrination has left him unable to do anything other than add in a couple of driving lights.

I really want to like that as it is different and treading a different path to others. But I fear it is too angular at the front to go with being too rounded at the back.

I heard yesterday that our European MD (based in Brussels) has ordered one as his weekend car. He can't decide on white or blue for the colour.

I seem to recall not liking the first iteration of this rehash for reasons long forgotten as it feels like a few years ago now and I'm not sure about this one either. Nowhere near as pretty as the original.

As a Cayman owner I'll look forward to having a look round one. Love the look of it but damn its expensive. Quick enough but is a 1.6 Turbo really going to be interesting enough for them to get away with a 50k price tag.

Probably bad news for Lotus who have this end of the market pretty much to themselves.

Me neither. Should be pretty ballistic if it ends up at the rumoured 1000kg and 300bhp, but it doesn't look as good as the Alfa 4C and costs the same amount. No idea who in their right mind would choose either over a Porsche, though. At least the 4C seems to be pretty depreciation-proof, but that's only because there are so few about!

It doesn't look particularly elegant from the pictures.  Certainly not as elegant as a 718 Cayman in my opinion, which admittedly may be biased.

I hope it sells well though, and I would certainly be tempted to test drive one.

Cayman designer copied the Porsche 904.


Cayman designer put a roof on the Boxster. Boxster designer copied the (original) 718.

Hhhm, yeah, that put it in the same ball park as an M4 and a whopping £10k over the base 718 Cayman and even with some spec added the same price as the 718 Cayman S

Ballsy call Renault, however good it may be and I think the name will add a little bit of cache but against the Porsche name I'm doubting this will sell in the same numbers as the Cayman or even the M4.

Yep, I would imagine so too, I don't expect Renault are looking at this as a "volume" product, more an Alfa 4C.

It'll sell for the money asked, as long as Renault don't treat it as one of their volume products, which I'm sure they won't.

I can't say for sure what I'd do with £50k burning a hole in my pocket but I like to think I'd not go for the default Porsche option but instead the 4C, Evora, A110, etc (are there any more?)

I can't imagine outselling the Cayman or the M4 is remotely in Renault's plans for this car.  I'm just glad that the volume manufacturers occasionally do something a bit nuts like this, the Ford GT, the Vauxhall VX220 etc

Not at all, as it wouldn't have been the best car for you.

My £50k non-Porsche frivolous car money would go on an Exige, all day long.  But the Cayman is by far the better all-rounder and is still really, really nice to drive.

I'm not saying they will and I too hope they don't, I just don't see it as a £50k product especially one with a 1.8 litre engine producing a lot less power than a Focus RS which is the best part of £20k cheaper.

Maybe I am badge snob (though I would buy a Skoda) but the cache of a car costing £50k with a Renault badge against the established marques of BMW and Porsche where you can see where your £50k is going I hope too that Renault market it as a niche model to those seeking something different.

I used to like them, I'd happily have a 1980s non-turbo 911 or any 928, but the magazines gushing praise has turned me off the newer ones.

No, don't you read car magazines - any Porsches are the pinnacle of motoring.  

They're certainly not shit are they?

And compared with a brand new version of something its 1980s forebear is going to be significantly less competent but, I presume, much more accessible to drive and have fun in.

I should have explained the reason I wouldn't want the Porsche badge - people I know have owned them have not found it a nice experience - their cars have been scratched (one 911 owner got to the point where he would only take it on a journey if he did not have to park in a public place), people shout abuse at them and one was even punched in the face by a pedestrian through an open window!

Not one owner I know has had a second.

Having said that, from what I can read and certainly from the way it looks, this Renault appeals to me a LOT more than a Cayman though.

Generally when I buy a car, the badge is the last thing I consider - I do find the image of the 'premium' brands a little off putting, but something I would put up with if it was the car I preferred.

That's interesting, because I had similar concerns before we bought the Boxster.  Despite it being bright red, having the roof down at every opportunity and being used pretty much every day, it's been quite the opposite.  I'm not aware of any abuse, but am aware of plenty of positive attention.  

Lindsay has had a couple of issues with being passed and slowing down for a look (repeat several times), but nothing more than tha and likely to happen with any nice car being driven by a blond.

I'm not bothered about what other people think, but if any car of mine got vandalised I'd be more than a bit update, so I'm pleased it's all good.

The people I know have all been owners of some kind of 911 variant and one a 944 - perhaps the Boxster doesn't generate the same reaction?

Yep.  My Cayman has had a mixed time of it earlier in its life (stolen once, vandalised (keyed) once, crashed into 3 times - all accidentally I hope...) but it has rarely attracted the wrong sort of attention from fellow motorists when being driven.  Certainly no more than other cars I've had over the past 15 years.

All the attention in the GT4 has been positive.

I'd certainly have another Porsche.

The weight (if true) is impressive, but must surely be dry weight.

I really like it, it's a good modern interpretation of the original without being overtly retro. It's a shame its not priced far cheaper which would surely bring much higher volumes. I'm not sure if there are enough left field buyers who don't default to Caymen/Boxsters (I'm in no way knocking those that do) when things like this are priced as direct rivals. I hope it massively succeeds so that a second generation is built and other manufacturers start making 'oddities' again.

Probably, but still on a par with the Exige, and considerably lighter than the Boxster or Cayman. Which, added to its great looks (IMO), makes it a compelling prospect.
