Agreed.  It's ironic that its least successful design element is its most deliberate.

Is it not the bad execution rather than the design idea that is the issue?

Define "bad execution".

I did consider replying but wasn't sure either - I presume Giant doesn't mean 'badly-built', so beyond that it's just design, I'd have thought.

I really think Lexus have a success on their hands. Since when did a Lexus press photo get to 2 pages on here?

I remember the preview teaser images showing the chrome surround of the rear door 'floating', so I assume the intension was for it to appear that the rear windscreen wrapped around the D pillar to meet the rear door glass as one continuous 'glasshouse', which in theory could've looked good. In execution, we see a piece of glossy black plastic with incongruous lines top and bottom that neither appears to be part of the body nor the glass.

I imagine the original design looked great, but engineering practicalities and budgetary constraints meant that (subjectively) the execution wasn't successful.

Pesky realities, eh?  If I had one it would have to be in a colour that hid this feature.  I didn't really like the XJ at all at launch, but it's really grown on me.

Looks good to me but that grille might be too much. Look forward to seeing one in the metal at Geneva this year.

Yeah, and getting up close and personal with the interior

I think they'll kick you out for that sort of thing.

BMW or Mercedes would - Lexus will be getting busy with the chamois ...

I think it just goes to show that design is always a subjective thing. You can't please all but if it gets people talking I think that's half the job done, especially for a brand like Lexus.
