My wife's car is in with Audi for a week while they try to work out why she gets a wet shoulder everytime it rains!

She has been given an A3 TFSI. I had to look up the number at DVLA to find out that it is the 1.4 because in the 2 miles I was driven in it I thought it felt very perky.

She's only had it a day but so far she thinks it is quicker than her A5 and it is averaging 37mpg which is about 100% better than her current 2 litre! She rather likes it and my daughter loves the fact that it has a decent boot and rear doors. It also rides better. Her only gripes so far are the flat bottomed steering wheel and the lack of parking sensors.

She's now starting to talk about changing again!

I think that they look better, more crisp, in the metal than in photos.

Same is true of the A5.  I saw an S5 towards the end of last year, and it looked much more taut and distinctive than it has looked in the magazines.  Smaller, too.

Has she decided to move away from a cabriolet then? Or is an A3 Cabriolet on the way - although that then loses the decent boot.

I think last year's far from dry summer, together with my daughter's constant teenager complaints about the roof being down, her hair getting messed up, the noise which prevents here hearing her phone, the outside smells etc have all conspired to make it less of an attractive option. The nagging from the backseat (god help any future husband) is monumental in proportion and it is sometimes easier to put the roof up and avoid the constant earache.

Nothing decided yet but the seeds are being sown!

I wouldn't disagree that the A3 is a better drive than the A5 (well, I've only driven the A4 but it's the same thing), and the 1.4TFSi is indeed a lovely motor that punts well above its weight. To be honest, i would be tempted to look at the A3 with open sky which is probably more useful more of the time.

If you're making your daughter travel in the back when the roof is down then I'm 100% on her side. One hateful journey was as a back seat passenger in an A4 Cabriolet driven in Barcelona. What with the wind, noise, dust and traffic fumes, I felt like I needed a steam clean and a good lie down after 30 minutes exposure. Whilst those in the front had a nice unruffled and open top time.

Surprised at the 37 mpg. Is that from a lot of urban driving? Mine does mid 40s most of the time and I can get it into the low 50s by driving like an eco weenie on an open road. I never do that though!

It has done about 20 miles mostly in 30/40mph fairly busy traffic and one 30 mile trip on A roads/dual carriageway where she said she "tried it out a bit"

It is


On the new one? I know the 8P was available with it, but not the 8V. Unless it was reintroduced with the facelift? My car has the so-called 'panoramic roof' but it's only a sunroof in reality. It looks huge from the outside, but is only a seventies sized rectangular hole inside. It groans and creaks in cold weather, too!

I'm with PG.

I love convertibles but it's a totally different experience in the back than the front. As the saying goes "Don't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes" so in this case I'd suggest you do 5 miles in the back of the A5 then decide if she's got a point or not.

I'd think rear leg room may well be an issue too as often the rear bench is further forward than the saloon equivalent to fit the hood mechanism into, and boot space/shape can indeed be compromising.

I bought the Saab Cab in 2003 over an A4/3 series as it had the best leg room and my kids were only 5 and 3 at the time to get some perspective on how bad they are. The Saab was the only one with a properly shaped boot too as the hood cover in the boot was fabric so could be pushed out of the way fully when the boot was up.

One big reason for selling my old 328i Coupe was the lack of rear legroom and hassle getting teenagers in and out of the back of it.

I think this is probably her main gripe but I am not totally oblivious to the problems of sitting in the back. It's just one of those evolutionary things - eventually things change with age and I fear we are nearing the end of topless motoring until our daughter leaves home at which time we will probably get another MX5 or a Boxster if I am still doing OK financially.
