Picked up the paperwork for my courtesy car and thought 'hmm, TFSi - nice'.

Went out with the service lady and she fired it up to see what fuel was in it - 'hmm, I hear the sound of three pots' I thought to myself, so this little bad-boy was the new 1.0TFSi which I eventually discovered had 95bhp.

The A1 has been written about (by others and me) so I'll focus on the specifics of this car. The engine is incredibly smooth, probably helped by each pot being reasonably small capacity, it was beautifully smooth at idle in a way three-pots can be criticised for - the stop-start was reasonably seamless too. It pulled with a degree of vigour that was unexpected and certainly it was more than happy to set the pace rather than struggle to maintain it, and the front end felt very light and chuckable with precise steering.

I tried it later on the M1 and it was also very capable zipping around the 70 leptons with a demonstrable ability to gain speed beyond this level, you could happily sit at 80, for example, all day without feeling that you are in the cheap-seats.

So, any foibles? Yes, a couple - whilst it was fine at motorway speed it had the odd inability to gain speed sufficiently in the 50-65 range, only going for 3rd got any sort of measurable acceleration, I suspect the decently tall hearing didn't help (5th looked like 25mph/1000rpm) and on more than one occasion I had to hit 3rd on the motorway just to keep up. Also, it had a laughable flywheel effect, no matter how slow you changed gear (which you didn't need to as it was beautifully weighted as precise) you'd always have the revs drop further as you engaged gear - it didn't want to lose revs at all.

Overall, quite capable and decent but the A1 feels curiously like last years product - perhaps it was the option-free Sport spec, but it did feel a bit basic too.

Would I have one? No. Hopefully the extra 20bhp VAG extract from this engine for the Golf Estate will help gooner with the acceleration!

I noticed the heavy flywheel effect on the 3 pot Skoda Citigos my last work had as courtesy cars.
To my mind it was the 1 thing that spoiled them in their role (to be thrashed mercilessly from cold   )

The A1 is just a bit forgettable, isn't it?
It's a shame, had they done this in the late 90's they'd have dropped an interior in it so impressive people would think it was from a few classes above.

Agree about the heavy flywheel effect, I noticed the same in the C1.  That engine is going to replace the one we have in the Ibiza (which is an "old tech" 8v 4 Pot Turbo).

I have not driven the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost though.

Ha ha, they did!

There's lots to like about the A1 but it just leaves me cold - I suspect an FG'd S-Line or S1 would be a different matter

I forgot to add that for another £400 you can upgrade from the 95bhp 1.0 to the 122bhp 1.4. I can't really think why oh wouldn't.

Indeed. An A2 still looks timeless inside.

Audi's of that era all had interiors that looked a cut above.

This one had a part faux-swimming suit material (like the stuff that works well in Volvo's), I quite liked it and the seats were comfortable. The lumbar adjustment didn't seem to do anything appreciable when being twiddled, mind.

I've come to the conclusion I'm a CitroŽn man, to be honest. Or DS. Or whatever!  In my mind, had CitroŽn been doing much interesting around the turn of the millennium then they'd have come up with something A2-like - perhaps more flakey, but that sort of thing.

Except you'd end up with something costing as much as a decent car from 2 classes above.

Every time I walk past the blue S1 down my road I look longer than I expect. I've never been in one but I do like the idea of a more premium feeling small car but it would have to be the S1 and these genuinely appeal.

I see that they 'easily' make 300bhp with a small tweak which must be a lot of fun and result in a car that could be extremely effective on our smaller roads although I did notice recently that they weigh more than I expected (not that far off a full fat Golf.

A neighbour has a blue one and despite not really being a small car fan and thinking the A1 is a bit basic looking inside, the S1 does appeal to me quite a lot.

I didn't find the A1 any more basic-looking than the current A3 - I think they both just share a rather Spartan interior design, which makes everything look a bit bare.
