Rosberg has just signed an extension to his contract so will be with Mercedes until the end of 2018.

I'm not surprised, but would have preferred them to do something a bit more interesting.

With the 2017 rule changes why would they unsettle the team any more than necessary?  He's a good ambassador and partly German so a bit of a shoe-in really.

Another couple of years of seeing him sulk after having his arse handed to him by Hamilton; again.

+ 1 it's a no brainer. As well the ambassador stuff he's also a nice guy and a pretty decent driver.

He's another Vettel. Only good at winning from the front and good at whining about the better drivers going past.

Of course with that new contract in his perfectly-orderly filing system he can ram Hamilton off the track at the start of every remaining race and win the title without upsetting Toto.

I see sniffpetrol have had another dig. I'll never tire of Porter taking the piss out of Rosberg.

I’m not surprised that Mercedes decided to keep Rosberg. There has been a lot of talk about the tension between both drivers, but the results are undeniable. They are utterly dominating the constructors championship, but not just because of the great car, but because both drivers can win on any given race weekend. If you compare that to Ferrari, Raikkonen can’t live with Vettel’s raw qualifying pace. If Ferrari had the fastest car right now, would Raikkonen be challenging for the pole or backing up Vettel where necessary? Arguably, Alonso could have won the 2010 and 2012 championships if Massa was more of an effective road block.

Mercedes have two exceptionally fast drivers that push each other, and Red Bull appear to have this dynamic as well with Ricciardo and Verstappen. I suspect Ricciardo is fed up of people raving about Verstappen. In Q1 at Hungary Verstappen was ahead, only for Ricciardo to turn the tables in Q2 and Q3 – he needed that IMO.

I still think Rosberg gets tricked into errors too easily by Hamilton in wheel-to-wheel combat, but it will be interesting to see how future duals play out and whether Rosberg can get one over on Hamilton. It must be one of those psychological things. Rosberg can get pole, dominate a race, but when it comes to defending or overtaking, it’s like Rosberg chokes and becomes rather scruffy against Hamilton – Canada and Austria of 2016 and Spa and Bahrain of 2014 are examples of this.

Long-term, I’m not sure about Mercedes junior Pascal Wehrlein. He won perhaps one of the most competitive championships in racing, DTM, but is that a good guide for F1? Di Resta made it to F1 but didn’t stay there. Wehrlein clearly had a fantastic weekend in Austria; he outshone Haryanto exactly like most expected to. But apart from that, he hasn’t exactly dominated Haryanto – and that is worrying for Wehrlein because Haryanto wasn’t particularly special in GP2. When one considers the likes of Ocon, Giovinazzi, Lance Stroll are coming up fast, is Wehrlein already old news? It did amuse me that the Sky F1 guys were saying that Vandoorne is getting old now, indeed, at the rather crusty age of 24 – time to get the pension. But seriously, it’s insanely competitive at present, even some of those great drivers who only won GP2 in the past two years are looking like yesterday’s news compared to the superstars coming through.

If rumours can be believed about Haryanto lacking the funding to continue at Manor, Vandoorne driving at Manor would put immense pressure on Wehrlein. It would be the battle of the McLaren and Mercedes protégé’s respectively.

Vandoorne looks like the real deal to me and would love to see him in F1.
