Le Mans 2016/GP2 Baku catch up.

What a heartbreaking situation for Toyota. The 5 car slowed with a matter of minutes to go, then it came to a halt on the pit straight. It’s called the Le Mans 24 Hours, not the Le Mans 23 hours and 57 minutes, but nevertheless, I felt utterly gutted for those drivers, especially for Davidson who drove fantastically well and has been chasing an overall Le Mans victory for years now.

I was really happy to see Townsend Bell win GTE AM in his Ferrari 488, alongside Bill Sweedler and Jeff Segal. Townsend Bell is a fantastic driver  in the WeatherTech Series in America, and it was only his second time at Le Mans – even last year he was on the podium. He is also a great and humorous commentator for IndyCar – good all-round guy.

But the greatest entertainment came on Thursday night in the wet when Yannick Dalmas was on full-opposite lock in the Audi R8 Safety Car. Me and my dad just laughed at the time, I’ve never seen anything like it. Dalmas’ brief was to check the track conditions, yep, mission accomplished…

It is time for Bernd Maylander in his Mercedes GT to equally showboat during the next F1 Safety Car period.

The GP2 in Baku was just nuts – both races. Race 1 had only 11 finishers out of 22, race two had five safety car periods in only 21 laps, with the most bizarre restarts. The leader on those restarts has actually been given a race ban, but the length of the pit straight was always going to produce this. The last proper corner is actually turn 16, because turns 17, 18 and 19 are flat-out. That means the leader can’t anticipate when the Safety Car pulls into the pits as easily as other circuits. There was also confusion with regards to the location of the Safety Car line; some drivers got it confused with the DRS line and the disparity in speeds caused shunts down the pit straight. I say eliminate this problem by making the start/finish line the point where overtaking is allowed – everyone is clear where that is. This would also eliminate the problem of the field being 5-wide on entry to turn 1 with less opportunity for slipstreaming, it looks amazing, but one just knows it won’t work. I’ve never understood the need for the Safety Car line; it answers a question nobody asked.

The F1 race was only one restart away from chaos ensuing.

Le Mans was another absolute corker this year.

Poor Toyota, I honestly couldn't believe their bad luck and I don't think the commentators could either. The driving was outstanding with the gap they managed to pull on Porsche, such a shame Kobayashi spun the number 6 as he was chasing down Porsche as they would have at least had a backup car to take top honours.

A bit like the Indy 500, second place really is the first of the losers and is worth nothing commercially.

Gutted for Toyota at LM and I await news of what caused the breakdown with interest (did they run out of fuel?)

Apparently it was a turbo failure.

Gutting nonetheless.

I thought that the car was a hybrid, so quite why they didn't stick it into electric mode to complete most of the final lap, then use the (now normally aspirated) petrol engine minus its turbo to complete the lap when the elctricity ran out, I don't know.

Also the car apparently finished second on the road but was disqualified for its final lap taking too long. time for the rule-malers to be taken outside and shot, I think. All that effort wasted with nothing to show despite completing the second longest distance of all the cars in the race.

Same applies to F1's rule-makers IMHO... near-ban on in-car communications when they could be safety-related, previous 2 seasons' ban on in-season engine development when it was obvious that with new rules, one team could have stolen a march on everyone else, yet you then prevent catch-up.  I could go on, but no wonder so many former fans have lost interest

I don't think it's as simple as that Chris. I suspect the race car's hybrid system is a fair bit different than the one you find in a Prius...
