The impressive durability of the Pirelli tyres in Russia continues for a third year. The combination of low air and track temperatures, a smooth surface and low-load corners means that the tyres need warming up for a few laps, and even the super soft tyre will last for 20 laps or more . Ricciardo did a 17 lap race simulation yesterday and he was actually faster on the 17th lap compared to the first lap, using the soft tyre. In China the super soft tyre was falling off after 3 miles in qualifying, in Russia its durability is such that it will be a one-stop race.

The final sector initially looks like a load of relatively simple 90 degree turns, but it’s been causing a lot of trouble so far this weekend. Some of the turns are are off-camber and it’s quite telling when even the Mercedes is loose on entry and oversteery on exit. Hamilton and Rosberg were on purple laps until they lost time in the final turn in free practice 3.

I don't fancy being in Kvyat's shoes at the next driver briefing.

Most media reports seem to be painting the incident between Kyvat and Vettel as an accident and the Russian being careless, but, and this is my controversial and perhaps unpopular view, I think otherwise.

I think some degree of it was deliberate, because from what I could see Kyvat made little to no attempt to slow down. To hit someone like that twice in the rear cannot be merely an 'accident'. He obviously has some beef with Vettel over the China accusation so I won't be surprised if he 'lost it' there.

I think the first hit was unintentional and just one of those late brake/concertina effects. The second hit was potentially Vettel's fault because he had a puncture and lifted off in the middle of the track - he knows very well that you can't do that on the first lap and expect to get away without being hit: he could have moved over to the right and slowed more gently giving the cars behind him more of a chance to avoid him.

Vettel's petulance over the radio is an indication of the pressure he (and probably the whole Ferrari team) is under. Maybe he has been told he will be out if he doesn't win. Maybe they are already talking to Da Ham to take up a Ferrari seat!

I don't think it was petulance, more frustration, however the spoilt brat from Red Bull days is starting to make the odd appearance.

As for the accident, I agree; first contact was just one of those things and the second was Vettel lifting off on a part of the track where anyone behind wouldn't expect.

Petulance? Completely natural (and hilarious) reaction to being shunted off on the first lap when in with a shot at a race win. Come on, some of you must have played sport at some time and have some empathy/understanding?

I don’t think any of Kvyat contact with Vettel was intentional, it was certainly ill-judged, but apart from Maldonado, nobody deliberately rams someone in an open wheel car. If they had bumpers, however…

The first nudge from Kvyat in turn 2 was more understandable; he appeared to simply misjudge the rate that the cars ahead were slowing down. That isn’t uncommon. The second whack in turn 3 looked more unforgivable, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that Vettel had a flat tyre and was going slowly, Kvyat smacked him in the rear only moments before! These aren’t tanks.

Not sure who it was, but moments before Kvyat hit Vettel in turn 3, someone astute went off the track on the right side to pass both. If that driver had been seconds later, he would have t-boned Vettel as he got turned sideways into the barrier. It looked more like a NASCAR restrictor-plate move when someone shoots for a gap in blind faith rather than much foresight.

Kvyat will be dumped by Red Bull at the end of this year, but not because of his accidents. Even if his messy opening lap hadn’t of happened yesterday, Kvyat has consistently been trailing Ricciardo for raw pace since 2015, and that will be the real sticking point for Helmut Marko and co.

Remember when Vettel had a few scrappy races in 2010? Red Bull didn’t mind because fundamentally he was quicker than Webber more often than not. When Vettel got a new chassis after the Monaco Grand Prix of that year, he was consistently quicker than Webber in qualifying, but Webber continued to outscore Vettel due to strange incidents during the races themselves. Vettel had a tyre cut at Silverstone, he hit Button at Spa, and got a drive-through penalty in Hungary when he failed to adhere to the permitted number of car lengths behind the Safety Car on a restart. Overall, however, Vettel’s raw speed reigned supreme in the end. After 2010, of course, he went on to collect another 3 championships.

Kvyat has been a disappointment on every level according to Red Bull’s own strict standards. He is a bit erratic during the races, there was of course his heavy accident at Austin as well, but he hasn’t got the dazzling speed to compensate for his crashes. Then you have the potentially amazing potential of Verstappen or Sainz in a Red Bull, Kvyat will need to find a different team for 2017.

Cobblers, if Vettel hadn't already worked out he had a flat tyre (and his positioning on the track suggested he hadn't) I don't see how Kyvat was supposed to - as Vettel hadn't gone to the outside, I think Kyvat thought he was in a race and was going for it, you can't blame him when Seb lifts off.

Nice to see Da Ham being out driven by Rosberg this season.

I don’t think so. Just before Vettel got hit again he accelerated at a normal rate, that progress then stopped by the middle of the turn, presumably because he felt the puncture. Kvyat should have seen that Vettel had slowed in relation to the other cars and gone to the right. Is that fair? Not particularly, but F1 is not about fairness, and other drivers would have avoided the second incident. Especially with a damaged front wing, so “going for it” wasn’t the best plan with his own damage.

The Chinese GP “incident” was no incident of any sort, and the turn 2 contact in Russia is something that regularly happens. However, wrongly or rightly, Kvyat now has a reputation as someone a bit reckless. Just ask Maldonado or Sato how hard that is to shake off…

Unless there is another Russian ready to take his place Kvyat will have a drive next year. Putin can be very persuasive when he wants to be...

+1

At the time of the incident it would have seemed to SebVet that it was everyone against him at the start of the race, much like when Schumacher ran into Coulthard and accused him of attempted murder. Same goes for Arrivabus's response: he sees his fastest, lead driver taken out in the first three corners two races in a row and (given that he wears his heart on his tattooed arm) throws the fucks around a bit.
