I'm sure we know loads of useless facts about cars, so this one might be worth making a sticky.

On surfing through Wikipedia the other day I read something which surprised me as I'd never heard it before but a check of piccies confirms it as a fact;

(One of the) reasons the Peugeot 309 looks slightly gawky is that it uses the same front and (on 5dr models) rear doors as the Peugeot 205 in an effort to save money.

That's not really useless! That basically makes it a 205 sedan!

I'll go dig up some. I'm sure I know a few...

Well bugger me, I never knew that. I remember when I first started work and all the reps had their Mk2 Cavaliers replaced by 1.9D 309s to save money. They were up in arms, complaining they were smaller and slower and just genrally shit. My boss had a 2.0 GL Cavalier which he loved and this was due to be replaced by a 309 and he literally hid for 2 weeks so they guy trying to deliver his new car couldn't track him down. In the end it was given to another rep and Chas ended up with a 305 which was even shitter, but bigger. He then spent every driving minute trying to shag the car so he could have it break down on a Friday so he could hire a petrol replacement for the weekend.

Wasn't the 309 also a hatch? I never knew that fact.

The word Trivia comes from Roman times when news stories were posted at road intersections, usually consisting or 3 roads or Tri Via.

Twas only a 3 or 5 dr hatch.

I had a late 405 and loved it but I remember the early ones were made from lego.

I once had the gearstick of a 1.6 come off in my hand going round a roundabout in Gloucester

I used to know loads of Latin based facts like this, my Latin lessons taught me far more about the English language than my English Language lessons did!

Ha Ha. No it isn't.

Great thread but we need forfeits for useless facts that can be de-bunked. Bring an element of danger to it.

It's just "rap" - it just a word that is slang for talking (rapping). It's not an acronym.

I'm waiting for; "Did you know "fuck" is an acronym for "Fornication Under Consent of the King"

or, more topically:

"Did you know Lexus stands for Luxury Export to US".

Or at least that's what Van Halen reckon.

Van Halen are old but quite as old as the word "fuck" that goes back to the 15th century with it's roots in Germanic and Dutch languages.

Can we have Posh - Port Out, Starboad Home and Golf - Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden as a nother couple of good ones?

Almost is the longest word in the English dictionary with all the letters in alphabetical order.

Uncopyrightable is the longest word that does not repeat a letter.

The world's biggest airport by land area is the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It has four terminals, of which one has been unused since its construction in 1982.

No it wasn't, it was all utterly original and from the great mind of Gordon Murray. It was, is and always will be utterly perfect and we should all bow down to Car God Murray at least once a month.

I can understand your mistake, as Murray is ever so modest and self effacing, you'll never find him talking about the F1, let alone his involvement in it.

Actually, we're both wrong - the Auto Union Type 52 had the same layout in the 1930s, though never went into production.
