In the new issue of Evo (134) they have run both their Mountune equipped Focus ST and RS together to compare performance figures and whilst i've not read the article yet the figures certainly make interesting viewing.
ST RS
0-30 2.6 2.7
0-40 3.6 3.7
0-50 4.6 4.8
0-60 5.8 6.0
0-70 7.5 7.9
0-80 9.3 9.7
0-90 11.7 12.1
0-100 14.3 14.4
0-110 17.5 17.8
0-120 21.8 22.3
0-130 27.0 27.4
1/4 Mile
Sec 14.5 14.7
Mph 100.5 100.8
Top Speed
Mph 148.5 149.9
This Mountune kit keeps trying to tug at my purse strings, there are a multitude of reasons why i can't go for it but i'm getting more and more tempted the more i read about it.
I understand the 256bhp(?) you get is the gauranteed minimum but to run with the RS like that it's got to be putting out more than that surely.
Evo's ST has done 7961 miles and the RS 6476 so it's not down to the RSs lump being tight.

All the straight line performance, but you get to keep the standard cars looks and save a shed load of cash. Makes a lot of sense!!
The RS is surprisingly poor when it comes to straight line pace. _________________

Sounds like a no-brainer doesn't it? An ST with a Quaife LSD and a Mountune kit would appear to be just as fast (in a straight line at least) and infinitely more stealthy than the brash RS.
What are your "multitude of reasons", just so we can convince you they aren't really important... _________________ Remember - A gym without chalk is a heath spa... |

Well, i've been given the go ahead from the boss to do it if i wanted but we are trying for a family, her work has just gone into administration and i want a road (push)bike, so my concience is telling me it's not the best time to needlessly splash a couple of grand about when i don't need to really.
But on the other hand..................................

I think it's more a case that the RS can't put all its power down efficiently and that 260 or thereabouts is the absolute top limit for FWD. The TT RS only has 10% more power than the Ford RS but it's a hell of a lot faster off the line and proves to my mind that Ford were wrong to eschew 4WD for a 300bhp car. What they've achieved is impressive but flawed.
Does the Mountune remap remove the low gear torque reduction? |

I really like the mk1 and could even have owned one by now but for the interior, which I really don't like. It's not just the RS blue bits either, as I'm not a big fan of the standard Focus either. I know that's a crap reason for not liking a car so I have others! They're pretty popular round here too (I see at least 3 on a regular basis and could go photograph 2 right now as long as the owners aren't out) and I like silver cars!
P.S if the offer of a drive is still there after that I'd be happy to accept. |

Talking of the RS, I still haven't seen one on the road yet.
There was a green one at the local dealers a while back that was up for £28K and it suddenly went down to £26K before being sold. I later found out that this price drop was because someone stuffed it into a kerb on a test drive and mangled the wheel and suspension arm! |

There was one on track at Combe a fortnight ago but the owner was taking it reasonably steady ( understandable really ). Impressive pace and stability through the corners though
Saw about 20 on the road that day but then there was bound to be a few at an RS owners club track day really! |

I'm only about 20 minutes away from CC. I should try and get down there more often!
I went to the RS owners day in around 2000 and have pics of a Sierra Sapphire RS being pulled out of the tyre wall after the driver lost it big time! |

Probably at Quarry - it's easy to get it wrong if you go in too 'hot'. 200SX and M3 spun there this time that I saw......as well as an MGB roadster V8
Followed an RS Focus back to the motorway....they do go exceptionally well on the road I'll say |

It was the far side of the track from where all the stands and displays are?

Yes, the big bend at the far end was probably Quarry

ETA - although after seeing your pics it looks to be further round than there - somewhere after the Esses by Old Paddock |

| Looking at the plan I'd say Old Paddock too. Maybe the wobbler started at the Esses, though? |

Very tempting isn't it - with my Sierra the Weber-IAW original map was for 270bhp rather than the 200ish the car was de-tuned down to so it wasn't a hard decision |

Oh don't get me wrong, if i had the money i'd have an RS like a shot, but i don't so just over a grand for the Mountune seems like it'd be money well spent.
There'd be no gulping on my part, i'd lower my window to look and listen at the nice motor as it flew past and smile at the driver trying to assert his alpha male status. |

Especially as the article states the Mountune St is not only faster upto 140 than the RS but also faster through the gears just about everywhere (100-120 in fifth apart)
There is also a question in the same mag as to how the original RS can post similar figures to the new RS with a significant power disadvantage (even taking weight into account). The answer basically points to traction issues an the 'healthy' horses of the original. |

| Traction may be an issue up to, say, 60 but from then on it shouldn't matter which makes the Mountune performance even better. |

They were saying that 5 years ago about 200bhp fwd cars, and 10 years before that about 160bhp FWD cars....

Got the Megane 250 up against the RS in Autocar next week.
From what Sutcliffe hints at this week the 250 Cup version is at least as quick as the old R26R.
Hopefully for Renault it will sell better as well |
