Yesterday this surprised me but by today I could see the benefits to both parties. It's hardly a gamble for United and lets face it Sheringham, Blanc and Larson were all supposed to be past it but proved useful signings. _________________ Keep Calm & Carry On. |

the united boards are awash with despair and anger.
Personally the biggest issue is his fitness,Uniteds medical team are quite possibly the worst in the known universe (Saha, hargreaves ).
If he is fit then fergy is the man to get him motivated ,and he is a natural goalscorer something that cannot be lost (or acquired).
Still would rather have had benzema, but its all set up for rooney to excel next season, with no ronaldo to cover for. |

Madness.
On the Rooney issue, covering for the oik seemed a waste of Rooney, other players might have spat their dummy out and asked for a transfer. Playing players out of position is common at Boro but surprising when the player involved is such high value and at such a high performing club as Man U with such a large squad. _________________ woof woof's defence lawyer claimed that "Booze played no part in his typo's."

Apparently Ferguson has always been a fan and has considered signing him in the past. I suppose getting him on a free transfer and with wages based on playing and performance, he's not taking much of a risk.
And who knows, maybe it'll be like Button in F1 this season, kickstarting a presumed moribund career. |

Why? Surely he's costing the club relatively little.
I think it's a good move for both parties - I'm sure he's still got it in him and as long as he's fit, he'll love playing for them and give it everything. |

Maybe the despair and anger is caused by the thought that the best they can do is a player approaching the end of his career who hardly seems to kick a ball these days. Regardless of the quality and fitness of the guy I'd imagine that for Man U fans someone rapidly approaching the end might be seen as a bit of a let down when other clubs are paying £20M+ for players more at their peak. _________________ woof woof's defence lawyer claimed that "Booze played no part in his typo's."

Maybe the Utd fans would rather they signed someone like, say, Drogba.
Fantastic player when he's up for it but most of the time he seems to be either lying on the ground following an apparent assassination attempt or being childish/stroppy/petty/sulky and IMO rarely gives anything like a 100% effort.
On balance they'll get more actual on field performance out of Owen and for a fraction of the cost. |

I suspect Owen turning up makes the opposition supporters' chants a bit different:

At least he shouldn't have to commute by helicopter any more. |

If it works he could become a legend like Sherringham did. He's out of contract with Newcastle so as a free transfer he's probably worth a punt. Especially as Real Madrid nick every other player Chelsea or United are interested in. _________________

The guys record is better than mine (and any other prem manager) so who am i to question his judgement.
Sh!t buys I can recall easily - kleberson, veron, the czech winger and forlan.
Wise buys - Sheringham, Cantona, Larson and more.
I've learnt from Ince and many other transfers that Fergy knows what he's doing more than any of the rest of us so just trust in him.
And on a free then he's great value - especially in an overheating market where players will be losing money rapidly in the next 12 months. _________________ Aint no substitute for cubic inches. |

| I seem to recall a manager who peopled his team with apparent has-beens. Brian Clough was his name. He did something Ferguson has yet to do - won the European Cup and then retained it. |

indeed, but winning the european cup and retaining it was a peace of piss in those days. One could argue it was harder to get into ,but once in it was much much easier to win.Liverpool once won it playing a grand total of 5 games I think,4 of which were against the likes of the champions of luxemborg and sweden or something like that.
Since the ECL's inception no team has retained it ,which shows how tough it is. |

What's more surprising? That Ferguson has signed Owen or that someone has actually signed for Man Utd this summer instead of Madrid/Barca/City?
It's a sensible move for both. I still think Utd are missing a player or two. They need to improve on last year's squad and haven't done that yet. _________________

wilst this is true, people forget that 2 of our best players from the previous year, brown and hargreaves missed the entire season.Hargreaves is very very importan player as he is the only ball winning midfield player we have. |

It's funny when people think like this, after all talent comes from somewhere before you've heard of it and it becomes expensive to buy.
Shouldn't people be looking to the upcoming youths (I presume there are some) at Man U and wondering if one/several of them is ready for the big team?
Imagine the joy if they could find the next Ronaldo from their own ranks and not have to spend any of the £80 million.
On a mildly related issue I see the spotty one has been mouthing off pending his presentation in Madrid.
Apparently the best players are in Spain (maybe) and the referees protect players better there.
So who exactly are the refs protecting the players from?
Oh, that's right. From other players.
The man's a 6 foot tall penis. |

I imagine that's what they're planning to do, but they've always managed to avoid over-exposing promising young players to early, hence the value of having a few wise old heads who don't cost too much. And if Owen does find good form, maybe he can put some pressure on the under-performing and expensive Berbatov. |

Macheda and Wellbeck are planned for great things but this keeps the pressure of for a while rather than need them to perform week in week out.
I suspect Owen will be on the bench for most games and used as a late sub as he was at Madrid, and if he puts pressure on Berbatov then fine.
If he can then sell him on in 1/2 seasons for a few mill then good business.
Personally I'd have preferred they'd kept Tevez but the true machinations of what happened will never be public I guess. _________________ Aint no substitute for cubic inches. |

Haha, that's hilarious, especially this
| Quote: | Charlie Reeves, a United fan from Surrey, said: "I remember that goal he scored for England when he was 12. Marvellous. His cheeky little face made him look like one of the sprites from The Magic Flute.
"And now he is playing for my favourite team unless I start supporting Liverpool or Chelsea, or that one with all the nice Jewish people." |

I was working beside Ronaldo yesterday.
Well, Real Madrid are training in the hotel beside my job.
It was funny though, they arrived on Monday night. Ronaldo, fresh from his transfer to sunny Real Madrid found himself starting his career on the first day of pre season training in weather that could only be described as worse than anything he experienced in Manchester. It was horrendous, there was even hailstones! _________________
