Righty - went to see it, but have walked away. It was advertised with air con and a cd player and had neither. A/C is probably a must have.

Aside from that it had been owned by a smoker and the garage hadn't even cleaned out the ashtray properly, lots of the interior was scratched all over the place, the driver's seat had a sweat stain, and the wheels were all tarnished. It had also missed a major service in 2007, though had had a pretty full history aside from that. The exterior, though dent free, was scratched and scraped up beyond the restorative power of t-cut.

For the money it was probably a sound car, and my wife liked its looks so an A2 remains a possibility, but I think a decent SE might be out of our budget.

Inspired by cbeaks1 recent experience I wondered...........What gives you the baulk?

None. I don't let something superficial put me off. As long as a car is half-decent mechanically, I'm happy.

I did, however, break this rule and buy a particularly troublesome Mi16x4...

Smoker - the rest of it could at least be fixed without replacing all of the interior.  The sweat stain is particularly nasty though and not something I have come across thank goodness.

Well, all 4 of my wheels are bloody awful, so go figure...

Sweat stain. It is bad enough some fat thigh has crushed the thigh support on the right of my seat, so a stain would be a total deal-breaker. I love my seats!

Scratches. Because it means expensive work might be needed.

The sweat stain just begs the question 'How did it get there?'. But would you want to know the answer? Uck!

I suppose it could have been something other than sweat?

Picking up on Blarno's point I think we are a little spoiled by having a succesion of new cars, and my wife's view of car interiors is scewed by having a new TT for 18 months. Having said that the interior of the 70000 mile V reg Clio RN we had a couple of years ago was much more pleasant than the A2's.

Stained seats would probably make me retch.

All of the above, but I'd look no further if the car showed conspicuous evidence of having been owned by a smoker.

All of the above, most of all sweat stains I think.

I mean, if they are sweaty, they probably don't give much of a monkies about personal hygiene, so what else do they do in the car?  Pick their noses?  Chew their finger nails?

Yuck Yuck Yuck Yuck.

I'd be more concerned to find body parts in the boot....

...or the corresponding body fluid stains

My advice would be to take a UV light and reject anything that has stains on the trim that fluoresces under UV.

My car was previously owned by someone who smoked in it. The smell was highly apparent for a while but some detemined cleansing seems to have more or less got rid of it. Thankfully there were no other repellent stains or other traces of the former keeper in evidence.

I like to think that I've rescued the car. I think it lived a sad and miserable existence as an urban runabout before and I have now put 10,000 proper miles on it.

As an ex-smoker, the fact of it being smoked in just shades the others - but only just!

I reckon I'd leave it well alone, just to be safe.

No, story would be much better if it was involving finding body parts from a grizzly murder in a GT3!

Hhhhm - what about suspicios-looking white stains on the back seats?

Many years ago, when I used to banger race, I discovered an unrolled condom (it looked used) underneath the carpet in the back of a car I was stripping for racing. I had to hook it out with a big screwdriver - ain't no way I was gonna touch it!

White stains are more likely to be paint - semen stains are a manky pale yellow colour once they dry.
