Aye, he can turn a corner or two.
Especially considering the level of talent that takes on the rally stage, many ex world champions have done it including McRae and Burns, Blomqvist, Mikkola etc. Not to mention current drivers like Sordo and Meeks.
I'd say Ken Block is brilliant at what he does, but not a WRC level driver. Sort of like those football freestyler's who can do amazing tricks but that's all.

Of course it isn't! You clearly need £90k for a Panamera

It's not far off - have you seen the list price of a mid spec Mondeo, or 2.0 diesel A4/3 series/C Class ?

If they'd been racing my copy of Autocar from two weeks ago, they woudn't. I still haven't seen it. (And the replacement took 10 days, too.)

Regardless, my point is that not many people will be paying £25k for a family saloon. Not their own £25k (even if they've got it) anyway.

This annoyed me as much as their £11k "cheap" car last week. Maybe they've got more money than sense these days, they're certainly losing touch with reality.

They're not too far off price wise. I mid spec diesel mondeo with a couple of options is pushing that. An Insignia and Passat are also getting on for 25k with a 2.0 diesel engine.

The 11k cheap car does seem a bit silly when a Panda costs closer to 7 as does an i10 or Picanto.

I don't think I know anyone who'd pay £25k for a family car.

I'd also argue the cars being put forward as family cars. It depends on how much you've got or your income, obviously, but those aren't what families generally buy here, a class or two below, maybe, or when they're a few years old but £25k? Not a hope for most.

I fear you are missing the point somewhat. Clarkson said £25k is family car money - he did not say it was what the average family spent on a car.

£25k is family car money when buying new - that's ball park for a mid range Mondeo, Galaxy, S-Max, low end 3 series, low end Freelander etc - a basic Nissan X-trail is £23k FFS. These are all cars bought as main family cars and just because Ronald P Average can't afford one doesn't change that fact.

Ignore the semantics over what constitues a family car and the point is that for the price of something averagely dreary, you can get a 300 bhp Focus with lots of bits.

What was the context Alan? (I missed the beginning of the show) TG are often hopelessly inaccurate when talking about cars, deliberately so I suspect in order to make a point/joke.

I think he was serious Phil.

He was reviewing a go fast Focus when he made the remark, his point being that the fast Focus was a bargain as it only cost the same as a family saloon.

GZ, If he'd simply said that you could pay £25k for a Mundano I wouldn't have too much of a problem, I'd just think that anyone who actually did that was off their trolley.

After his comments in recent weeks I honestly think his wealth is causing him to lose touch with reality.

I think that's pretty much a given! Think all car journos do eventually, and you start reading/hearing that a particular 500bhp car feels underpowered and the like. Hammond has defo lost touch with reality, WTF is going on with his hair?!

Hammond looks dreadful.

The car vs army bit was rubbish, as was the race.

Bolt was fast but dull, so all in all the low of the season thus far.

Not the greatest show. They seem to be tired and recycling old ideas now (Hot hatch torque steer was demonstrated on the Astra VXR; Clarkson vs military has been done numerous times).

Even the race seemed a bit dubious. I would have thought the car would win, and I think they sandbagged it a bit for dramatic effect.

I actually read something similar in an American magazine (Car And Driver I think) a while back. In that one they used a Bentley Conti GT Convertible to race against FedEx from Washington D.C to Miami. I thought that was a much more interesting race because FedEx promised overnight delivery with just one stop (Memphis), so the car really had to push it.

I prefer the R26R. Lighter and less Halfords looking. Just. I can't warm to the Focus RS at all. I'm sure it's a brilliant car, but in green with all the black plastic, it looks properly Barryboys, and it doesn't sound that good. With a 300 horsey 5 banger up front, I'd be expecting ur-quattro-mid-stage noises, so the muted warble is disappointing.

The Panamera is doubtless a fine car, but looks like a dog taking a shit. And the centre console looks like one of those 7k mobile phones that publicity whores have.

There's a green RS parked around the corner from our office, and its engineering excellence is utterly undermined by the Hot Wheels styling, for me at least.  Come to that I saw my first GT-R this morning, and whilst it's in a different league, I have similar feelings about it.

Race was fairly easy to predict because each connection in the Network is scheduled so baring a tech plane, weather etc the letter side is pretty fixed.

They didn't seem to have too many hold ups en route so I would suggest they were a little ambitious in the planning stage, they were also reliant on ferry crossings etc

I helped set up the tracking system in the van's to follow the letter.

Watched it last night.

The Porsche looks good on the road in motion - looks rubbish at the kerb and under-wheeled. Options are ridiculous.

Couldn't live with the plastic Megane - those windows?

Hammonds hair - what the fuck? The same goes for May - he looks like a Spaniel.

I think the Porsche looks like a 5 door Chrysler Crossfire - the dog shitting analogy for that applies to the Porsche.

The wheels it was on were an upgrade.
Imagine what it'll look like with the standard ones.

The Megane looks awsome but I don't think I could live with one on a day to day basis it's far too extreme, I'd rather an R26. The rear screen is £896 +VAT.

I reserve judgment on the styling of the Porsche until I've seen one in the flesh but it does look pretty heavy around the rear.

Hammond's hair is so over styled it looks silly, May's hair just suits him as it makes him look a bit excentric, which he is.

I reckon that the show needs a breath of fresh air, and Hammond being replaced would be a good place to start.  Along with one 'race' per series, maximum.

I would imagine his near death crash makes him unsackable in the eyes of the producers. I also imagine he brings in a demographic of audience who wouldn't otherwise watch. He is the weakest link, but still better than all the presenters on Fifth Gear!

Didn't the races used to be an end of series finale?

I wouldn't change the team, as they work well together. Instead, get rid of nonsense like SIARPC, the Cool Wall and the Stig (replace the latter with a driver who can talk about cars as well as driving them), and do more full-length features like Vietnam.

All the banter between them now seems incredibly scripted and obvious, to me it seems to have lost the 'three mates taking the piss out of each other' qualities and now just seems to be follow a formula of Hammond being short, JC being an idiot and May being slow or old fashioned.

I must admit to liking the notion of the stig, and the cool wall is so infrequently aired, mores the pity in my view.  CIARPC is a dodo, and the banter does rather whiff of memorising your lines four minutes before you go on stage.

I'm not sure CIARPC is dead but it does seem to last about 10 times as long as it used to and too often seems to involve JC gushing over the guest.

Mind you I've barely watched any of the last 3 series so maybe I've just been unlucky with the ones I've caught.

But don't you think that - like all the jokes on Top Gear - they've flogged it to death and beyond. The time to have dropped it would have been after Black Stig's "demise". And to give you an idea of the demographic, apparently some people really believed he'd snuffed it.

It would also be good to have an expert driver talking through the timed lap for each car.

I'll make a cup of tea or do something else while the "star" is on. I'm reasonably happy with the show just so long as the cackling "throbbing" frog doesn't feature...or Jason Plato...or any of that lot apart from Tiff, I like him.

They should have got Sabine Schmidt (sp?) to replace the Stig. Whenever she has featured she has been funny and seems to fit with the others, whilst being different and also being a pretty decent driver.

The Focus just sounds nasty. And not nasty in a good way, nasty in a 'my exhaust has just fallen off' way.

Dave, what I said was "I'm reasonably happy with the show just so long as the cackling "throbbing" frog doesn't feature...or Jason Plato...or any of that lot apart from Tiff, I like him."

That seems to show that I know TG from FG to me.

Am I alone in missing VBH? She's not been on FG this series yet.

Tiff would be the ideal replacement for The Stig on TG - but somehow I don't see that ever happening.
