Yep.  An S3 TDi, seen today with nothing to proclaim its stolen identity bar some badges and mirrors with tinfoil on.  They said hot (well, I believe that is the owner's intent), the exhaust and and narrow track said not.

Who falls for these things?

The signs of rot setting in at BMW were eveident when they launched the M316i Compact. I mean, an M car that looks like a poverty spec Compact with a hairdryer for an engine.  What were they thinking?

I should stress that I don't mean M-Sport models.  I mean a 318i badged as an M3, and things of that ilk.

I've mentioned the diesel M5 what shared a carpark with a V10 M5 at my parents old company. Very sad. But not as bad as the Rover 600 M power I saw last year.

Tina's dad had an H plate 5dr, grey/blue Micra "Turbo", he did it as a piss take and a bit of fun but a colleague of his was convinced it was a Jap only model and a grey import.

I've seen an E39 5 series with M badges, big wheels, standard ride height and a puny single exhaust. Sadly he didn't follow me down a dual carriageway.

I saw an RS4 1.9tdi Avant in my neck of the woods a couple of weeks back, he had large alloys and a big exhaust too, can't remember how old it was but it was from well before the RS4's time that's for sure.
These people do these things for our entertainment.

Richard Porter has done something similar but opposite in his EVO column.
An E39 M5 badged as a 518i. Tempting

Ah, Q-cars! Wonderful! I appear to be having quite the reminiscence day today - my Q-car of choice as a youngster was an 1800 Escort Mexico badged up as a 1.1L. Sadly, I could never afford the Mexico at the time!!

The Swindon Jaguar franchise inspected a Jaguar 'S' type, prior to trade-in. They discovered the car was not a Type R, but a 3.0 SE with plakky bits adhered to it.

The owner had bought the car believing it was the genuine item about two years before and was most displeased.

Why did he think he was getting beaten at the off by a Range Rover 2.5 DSE?

Poor chap.

I've seen a 318i Coupé branded as an Alpina B6...

...It had big 'Alpina B6' decals on the side doors...

...It also was the same colour as my liver.

I am curious as to why it's your liver, as opposed to just liver.

Is yours an unusual colour?

If so, how have you come to see it?

Enquiring minds need to know!

Not quite in the same league as an M318i, but I saw an E46 drop top being driven by a random blondey bint, with a 330i badge on the back, but only the peashooter exhaust.

Be honest, love. It's a 316 isn't it?

There was a new shape 5 series diesel badged up as an M5 at the gym yesterday. I was very tempted to ask the owner about his V10 but bottled it.

Last week I was overtaken by an Audi Cabriolet. Badged as a 2.6 on the back, and with V8 badges on the wings. Very sad.

Now where can I get a 16v grill badge and a VR6 boot badge?

If you see him again you could ask if it's true that the V10 sounds a little dieselly at idle.

I've seen an E39 % series in Dundee that has the sport bodykit, 4 exhaust pipes a massive bonnet, big wheels and 540i badges

I was at the petrol station last week in the Fiat and he pulled up beside me and put in £6 of petrol.

Saw a black 5 series yesterday (one before current).  Said M5 on back and had crap stick on wing vents.  Single tailpipe.  Clearly something from the lower end of the range.  Why????

Could be, I noticed that his nct (mot) expires in 2011 on an '08 car. For a test that's done every 2 years, something smells fishy...

Check it out.

I heard that was going to remain top secret and BMW would refuse to acknowledge it existed for about 50 years

I recently got overtaken by an E46 M3 and the owner had gone to the extent of cunningly disguising it by reshelling it with a 4 door body and finishing it off with a single, downturned tailpipe.

Either that or it was a 318/320D.
