What's the advantage of them not being round?

In the Motorcycle world they talk about "better brake pad contact" not sure how this is achieved mind, though I guess perhaps it could help to deglaze the pads too?

Over to you Phillip...

Well, they can deglaze the pads, although modern pads don't suffer as much these days from glazing anyway.
Weight is the main advantage -  the standard discs weigh 7.4kg each, these weigh 2.95kg each, big saving of unsprung and rotational weight.
Even though the mass and braking area of the disc is reduced, the extra pressure from the reduced contact area isn't a big worry, as brake pads are specifically designed to be insensitive to pressure changes, otherwise you're brakes would be unpredictable.
So there's not as big a problem as it first appears;

Firstly, the interrupted cut on the pads allows air to be pumped across their surface, so the pad temperature remains similar to a standard disc, even though the peak disc temperature will be higher.

Secondly, the alloy bells in the centre transmit heat away from the disc to the alloys far faster to offset some of the mass loss.

Thirdly, the discs can now pump far more air through their internal vanes, so cooling is increased there too.

If you look at the shape of the disc, a lot of weight is lost from the inside which is unswept anyway, and the shape is designed so it actually moves the effective braking radius outwards slighty.
Anyway, the shape of them means the full surface area of the pad is still swept, but with an interupted cut
They don't suffer from hydroplaning after hitting standing water like a plain disc can either.

The discs and pads wear faster but I can live with that.

They should be on the other side to counteract the mass of the driver...

I had the bucket and sponge out today and I have to say, the Bora is in great condition for a car in it's tenth year.

And a couple of the Golf

Are you going to replace the Golf with a Renault 5 at some point?

The Bora looks to be in better nick than the Golf

Couldn't help but get fiddling today! The V-grille came off quite easily with only one broken clip :D

The body shop looked at the mirror today and will be sending me the repair quote (Some little shits had kicked it during the night a few weeks back ). I've still got the cover, so they'll re-use that one.

Those alloys are really smart. And also first-hand evidence that Subaru can make an attractive car when they put their mind to it.

What's the significance of the pattern of circular indentations on the right of the trim strip (above the "LEGACY" badge)?

You can get aftermarket LED rear light clusters as well but they are a fortune.

The Clio ones aren't too bad. The only difference is that the side/brakelight lens is clear and not red.

I'm investing in some strip LEDS pretty soon and I'm going to butcher my old cracked rear light to see if I can retro fit LED side, brake, indicator and reverse lights.

I noticed the new Honda Jazz has them fitted.

Not really something all the local Grannies would wont on their cars I would have thought.

I'm very impressed that your Black car looks so shiny and clean, SpecB. I'll wait until it's dark before going near the Golf.

Some piccies from my journey back to the midlands from Llan Festiniog earlier today, the last 3 pictures were taken on the B4407, everybody needs to try it at least once.

The ST was built for these roads - narrow, twisty & bouncy with lots of sharp corners.

I'm officially without car for at least 2 weeks, as this was the sight that greeted me when I removed the front brakes earlier on:

^^This one's stuck until I can get a drill. The bloody stupid retaining screw is stuck solid and rounded off. I don't understand why retaining screws are needed, the wheel holds the disc in place. It's not like it's going to fall off, is it?

I knew they were getting bad, but I wasn't expecting broken pads!

The funny thing is that the brakes have felt brilliant for ages, even on the Evo Triangle. I just thought they were fading because I'd been braking hard on the downhill sections so I could turn round for another drive-by.

They were squeaking like buggery on Friday on the way home from my exhaust check. One look at the state of them this morning was enough to make me decide to decomission the car until they get replaced. There's no way I'd contemplate carrying on driving with just me in the car, let alone carrying the Missus and little 'un.

I'm now rolling around in a 1997 Astra 1.6 Arctic Estate that belongs to my Stepdad. Not a bad motor, if I must say.

Picked up my new brakes today and...............they've sent the wrong sized discs. Looks like they missed a letter out on the order pick and they've sent 255mm discs for an Astra Van. The pads are right, though. Mintex, too.

Who knows how long this is going to take to sort out...

Would you believe it, some swines kicked or hit it again during the night! My Dad put the casing back on and the bracket isn't broken, but the mirror glass had dropped out and whilst it has stayed in one piece, it's very lose in the mount. The worst thing is, I fold the mirrors, so the devious bastards unfold it just to break it.

Still, if they're doing it to a sodding Astra, at least they aren't damaging the S-Type.

Well, they've sent the right discs this time, just need to buy a couple of HSS drills to get the old disc off and Blue Frog is back in business.

Just in time for payday and a full tank of V-Power, because I feel like it.

Happy days.

I'm keeping the calipers matt black from now on.

Now I just need to bolt up the pesky ARB bushes and it's driveable again.

Not really.
Can't you lower it a bit more, get 165 tyres stretched over those rims (for the Euro look) and perhaps turn the tailpipes through 180 degrees so they're pointing upwards.

Oh and what chavmobile would complete without Lexus style rear lights?
