I like that

The innards of the ball and socket part of the mirror bracket rust over time. It just snapped off. Replacement is 20 quid from a breaker.

We have a donor! It's green and a 1.8, no pictures until we pick it up, hopefully next week. All for the princely sum of £200.

And so it begins.

Will do. I don't even know if it's a Mk1 or Mk2 yet. All I know is it's a 1.8 with LSD and a new cambelt.

Arriving on Monday...

First port of call once we ensure it is running fine is a sneaky trackday.

It's here. Too dark for photos, but I'll get some tomorrow morning. Suffice to say, for £200 it is excellent. Starts, runs and appears to be mechanically sound. British Racing Green as well, so bits for the forum if need be. Best of all - no PAS and LSD.

Mk1 indeed. Pictures rushed this morning as I had to get to the dentist.

My thoughts exactly! Still, I'm curious as to the outcome of the Blarnosport plans for it too. Decisions decisions!

Guessing how Blarno's mind works the better the car the happier he will be chopping it up. If he finds out it's a limited edition he will be cock a hoop

The plan is already in place on page 1 of this thread. We may MOT it and run it for a bit first, but first port of call is a trackday or drift day.

There's an old military axiom (I'm sure ALF is familiar with it) which says; "No plan survives first contact with the enemy".

We shall see!

Jim is itching to rip this thing apart! But, he wants us to track it first to get a feel for it. I'm in, should be a laugh.

It's staying with me until Sunday, then it's getting shifted to Jim's garage where it will be stripped. Better pictures and a better idea of the overall condition. Currently, the battery is dead and the key is stuck in the ignition, but we can live with that (It'll probably end up with a starter button anyway).

Can't wait!

The right colour for some bits for my dad. And for Colin.

The hood looks OK, as far as I can tell in the pics.  Are you keeping the interior? I must get a list of required bits from my dad. From off the top of my head, radio aerial, front no. plate plinth, dashboard upper section and instrument cowl (easily broken on removal) and possibly bonnet.

Had you driven one before this arrived? They are a hoot. How come this was so cheap? Are the sills ok?  Deffo a LSD? I ask because no PAS was, I think, only the base 1.6i, maybe 1.8i. LSD was on the 1.8iS but that almost certainly had PAS. There is a way to check visually, but need to find the link. Or jack the rear end up and turn the wheels.

EDIT: Leccy window regulators needed too.

Keep fit windows here I'm afraid! Interior is going as well, we're only keeping the dials.

So is it a 1.8i rather than iS?

If you end up with a list of bits and there are some up for sale, then please let me know and I will see what my dad wants. I have some work to do on his car over the winter, the priority being new discs and pads all round and new brake fluid. After that a service including air and fuel filters. Some weekend work for me there.

I will be following your project with interest!

Oh and what is the latest thinking on future engine choice....?

I could be interested in the front wings for our Eunos/MX. It's the right colour so they wouldn't need painting.

It's actually sitting under a pile of cushions in my mother-in-law's garage and I haven't really looked at it, or even started it for months. It's a bit of a shame but we never got out in it this summer and I'm not sure what to do with it. Use has been minimal since we bought the first 500C in 2010 to be honest. It's in OK nick but there's some bubbling round the front wheel arches, hence the interest in the wings.

Or I might just get shot.

The driver's front wing is pretty corroded near to the bumper, as they are wont to do, unfortunately, so that may well be a bin job.

But, I'll have a decent nose around it on Saturday.

Passenger wing is fine, sills have been welded. I have new battery to fit, so I may take it out for a cheeky spin on Saturday.

Fitted a new battery this morning and it started on the button. Very responsive throttle, runs beautifully.

It's an MX-5 - these things are to be taken as read. A bit of an unloved example, but there are enough of them not to worry about such things.

Gave it a bit of a clean inside, found about £1.13 in loose change. Discovered that it really, really needs a new alternator belt and tightened up the throttle cable a bit to remove slack. It's ready to meet the grinder....

And.....the alternator belt snapped just as it was about to leave my drive. We're going to buy a couple of new ones tomorrow in case it doesn't like them.

And then it was gone....

A new alternator belt later and it's gone to a secret location somewhere in the bowels of Hell, or Trafford to those in the know, to be pulled apart and fettled.

The job is on! We've bought some small box section to brace the clamshells whilst we prep them and the MX5 is about to get chopped. So, if anyone here or anyone you know needs any external panels, hood or even some interior stuff, give me a shout - it's all going.

Need various bits, yes!

Starting with:

Wheel brace and jack
Radio antenna
Bonnet brace plastic clip (holds it in place whilst bonnet is closed)
Instrument cowl/pod - possibly full dash if it's going.
Thin metal braces that are under front bumper

Might think of more...!

We're possibly keeping the dials, definitely keeping the brace, but the rest will be up for grabs.

It's not the dials, just the black plastic cowl over the top.

Let me know what you want for my wish list via PM. Thanks !

We don't need the cowl, so that's going as well. Stripping should begin this weekend.

Grand. To remove that brittle plastic cowl there are two screws underneath the front edge and then you need a good pull towards the drivers seat to Un latch the clips at the back. Unfortunately those break easily...

If you could pop the aforementioned bits aside, please, I will double check what my dad wants/wants to pay for. I'm trying to convince him to get a full set of new tyres as each corner has a different budget thing on. You just don't do that with a '5. But convincing him is an uphill struggle...!

No problem. I've given Jim the list and he's going to put them aside this weekend when he starts the stripdown.

Are you not involved in the project now?
