Exactly!  I bet most bad parking is down to people being lazy and/or inconsiderate.   I do my best to protect the car from door bangs, but wouldn't park across 2 spaces.  It's so annoying when you park in acres of space and someone goes and parks next to you.....

The logic is sound though - subconsciously, they are aware you car about not getting your car bashed so when you come back to your car, you won't bash there's - at least they know one side is safe.

If I were the Cayman driver I'd have merely parked right on the line on the passenger side. Plenty of room to get back in the driver's door, no one would bother squeezing in between your car and the trolley garage and there'd be no one posting photos of your twatty parking on the t'internet.

No, we need a door banging Police - bang someone's door and you get your hand chopped off. Start with the problem, not the reaction.

I always return to a parked car with a little dread - I know I'd be incandescent if someone dinged my car's door.  In a largely empty car park I don't suppose there's too much harm in doing as the Cayman has, but taking two spaces is not usually justified to my way of thinking.  One of the car parks near me is frequently only ever full because several of the spaces have been 'stolen' through poor parking, deliberate or otherwise.  I usually park as far away as seems necessary to avoid other vehicles, but as Martin sys, this usually means that the next person will inexplicably gravitate in your direction.

As well as people's poor parking skills and limited capacity for personal responsibility, there's also the issue that spaces are usually too small - like the garages in a lot of old housing they are designed for another era.

But looking at the Corsa and that 4x4 above I stand by what I say - ticket the fuckers.

I'm going to regret saying this but I've been very lucky re: door dings. The last one I had was in 1994 on my Xantia.

I did get a big ding on the bonnet of my Lexus from the hard plastic nose cone of a large rocket as it came back to earth (a firework one, not a NASA one).

The A2 has collected a dent on the near side rear door, only a small one but by the crease that runs along the car - fair game to them, it's a narrow car that means it should be otherwise reasonably immune so they must have been giving it a good go.

German neighbour at the apartment in Mallorca.  My dad said that he usually blocks the road off with a bucket or two but seems to have forgotten today.  The stupid thing is, if he could drive then he could probably get that car in there.

I hope someone keys it because he really is a prize arsehole.

It's times like that you long to place a car battery in it's roof then shoot at it with an airgun.

^ makes sense - doesn't want it dented by careless people opening doors.

It looks pretty precarious though, I'm sure it would fall over hard if I approached it.

Not the best pic, as I couldn't be arsed to cross the road, but I think it's reasonably clear how far away from the kerb the front wheel is? If not, it was about two feet!

Does owning a white Beemer automatically qualify someone as a twat? I like to think so...

I love Italian parking and I love that a) the parker doesn't care and b) no one else does either.

Another example of Italian parking, from the same vantage point as above:

However, a little red Panda was lining up to reverse into the spot where the MINI is; the MINI just drove in frontways, there was a bit of tooting; MINI driver got out and said something in Italian, he looked and appeared all apologetic in his body language and the Panda driver drive off.

I would have got out and gone bloody mental and if MINI driver hadn't backed down I would have parked alongside and buggered off.

How else does one discourage this sort of behaviour? A polite note on the windscreen perhaps. That'll probably work. Not.

Sheet of A4 paper
Black marker pen
Scissors
Sellotape

Write "RET" in large letters, cut around it, stick over first part of number plate. Then photograph it and put it on one of those "Spotted" Facebook pages.

Not me but the Peugeot; Sunday morning at Aldi, a heaving car park, I'll just shove my car in like that at an angle and taking up some of the next parking space, obviously it wasn't an issue for me, however upon returning to the car, Peugeot is gone so it looks like I'm the idiot:

Again not me, the Evoque was there when I got there,  Saturday morning in Shere, it's always busy there and the car park is small, this was the only space available and there were queues to get a space.

It's not massively clear but there was tonnes of space to the left of the Evoque,  plus it's in at an angle too, it was a struggle for me to get out and it is tighter than it looks, however I should imagine it would have been harder for the Evoque driver to get in, on the other side next to the Audi, it looks tight but it wasn't, Tina had no issue getting out.

Why can't people just think a bit further than themselves!
