Jaguar XF from the A pillar back. Much less desirable, though.
Looks like it has far more in common with the A5 than the A4? |

Er - except for the new A4 hatchback it seems.

To bastardise another comment I read -
"So this is the hatchback version for people that want a 5 door version of the 2 door coupe version of the 4 door A4, but don't want the 5 door Avant. Anyone else confused yet?"
I prefer the looks of the Rover SD1, but sadly they don't make them any more. |

No you can't copyright it - as well as Lexus, Nissan have also copied it. But I couldn't imagine Audi using something so strongly associated with one of their German rivals. |

Like an ST220 Hatch?
Having run a Mondeo hatch I concur that they usually have enough boot space for most hauling duties.
I just wander if they are surrendering their premiumness somehow? _________________ Aint no substitute for cubic inches. |

| I'm glad they've kept that nice wheelarch accent from the A5, but I have to say that apart from things like the TT and R8, Audi are just cranking the same car out in different sizes. They need to introduce some clearer differentiation between models. And bring back the A2. |

+1.
It looks quite nice - especially on the 22" wheels in the pictures (no doubt a £5k option) - but when one comes up behind me I won't know what it is until I've let it past.
Actually that gives me an idea.
Since most Audis usually appear behind you pretty quickly and proceed to sit right up your chuff they should apply model badges to the base of the windscreen (the cars are usually too close to see the bonnet) in the same way they do to the bootlid.
I'm just away to email Audi's marketing dept with my fantastic idea |

Looks crap. It's a mish mash of just about everything else in the upper price bracket....
There's overtones of Merc and BMW...I'd look closer but it's lost that thing that makes Audi different from the other two..

Not too sure on that, it does look better than the saloon but is it another derivitave too far, Audi customers and staff will start to get confused about exactly what car they want and will it steal sales from itself?
Is it an A4 hatch or an A5 5 door?

I seem to have caused confusion with the name in my OP. Officially it is the A5 Sportback, which to my mind is marketing bollo for what could and should be just called A4 Hatchback. But then they couldn't charge an exorbitant premium for it could they?...... |

Isn't this just a proper return to the old days when there were saloon, hatch and estate versions of every repmobile?
Now that Fords and Vauxhalls are no longer the default choice Audi have stepped up to the plate and BMW will be sure to follow with the next 3 since they've already done it with the 5 series and they're clearly on a niche filling mission. |

Yep, to me this is the admittance that they are now the default repmobile.
I like the later pics, and the pillarless is need. BUT how many family cars will you sell with only 4 seatbelts? I suspect that feature might be dropped before production. _________________ Aint no substitute for cubic inches. |

The problem with pillarless windows is that at some point they will stop working properly, if they're the ones that automatically drop.
My Alfa GT was afflicted with a problem there from day 1 and a recent buyers guide for the current M6 highlighted this as a problem on them too.
It's ok if the car is in warranty but a proper fix will involve a new motor and labour time and easily be a few hundred quid. |

The problem I see now is that while they are trying to fill every niche possible, they all look the same. Like the same car in different lengths and number of doors.

Alot of manufacturers are guilty of this, like the Polo looking incredibly similar to the Golf, just scaled by 0.85. They seem to think if they don't make all their models look the same people won't be able to determine which marque they are. |

Possibly the American market has something to do with it, since they only really buy saloons or estates. The hatchback has never been popular.
Personally, I think it looks pretty good and it would certainly be on my list to look at. I also think it looks better than the A4 saloon. The biggest problem I see is that Audi may have got greedy and instead of it being priced as an A4 hatch, it will be £3000 or £4000 more expensive and priced as something between an A4 and A6. _________________ Every man is the architect of his own future. |

Same goes for the Passat CC. Pointless. |
Nah, nobody's going to fall for that..... are they? |

Ever it was thus dear chap - all those 'Sport' models earlier in this decade wearing bendy 'RS4's' (despite being 17"...) _________________ Shame your mind don't shine like your possessions |
