Your top 5 albums of the 1990s

This is a very difficult list for me but, based on how often I still listen to them, my 5, in no particular order are:

Faith No More - Angel Dust
Pearl Jam - Ten
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Ice-T - OG
Fishbone - Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Centre of the Universe

TBH I'd probably provide a list on a different day as the late 1980s and 1990s are when I really got into music !

Off the top of my head...

Lewis Taylor - Lewis Taylor
702 - 702
Teenage Fanclub - Songs from Northern Britain
Keith Le Blanc - Stranger than Fiction
Biosphere - Microgravity
Andy C

In no particular order:

Urban Hymns - The Verve
The Great Escape - Blur
Definitely Maybe - Oasis
Moseley Shoals - OCS
WTSMG - Oasis
Blarno

Christ, that's tough!

Faith No More - Angel Dust
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Metallica - Metallica
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice In Chains - Dirt

Jesus, you guys don't do 'eclectic', do you?
Blarno

I wasn't far off putting Blue Lines by Massive Attack in there. Truth be told, I love all sorts of tuneage, just that rock and metal really float my boat

Guess you aren't too familiar with Fishbone then?

The finest funk/ska/reggae/metal/punk band ever to come out of LA.

I met him at a drum clinic in Tower Records in Glasgow in about 1993 - he started talking to me because of my Nine Inch Nails badge as he produced the first album.

I think my brother has the album you mention, he also has some Tackhead CDs which I like as I'm a big fan of Doug Wimbish's bass playing, especially with Living Colour.

Truth and Soul is actually one of my favourite albums and way better than ...Monkey... in my opinion. I saw them at The Astoria in 1988 when Angelo threw himself off the balcony, then again at Newcastle Riverside in 1989 (supported by that Glasgow bowfer Kevin McDermott, bizarrely) and at The Paradiso in Amsterdam in 1990.

I have maybe 20 Fishbone records right back to the very first from about, what, 1982?

Big, big Tackhead fan, too. Saw them many times. Le Blanc is a brilliant player and great musician in general. He played a solo gig at King Tut's  in about 1991 that was utterly bizarre.

I'll have to think about this list, but for now:

Masters Of Reality - Sunrise On The Sufferbus
Green Day - Dookie
Radiohead - The Bends
Pulp - Different Class
Supergrass - In It For The Money
Eels - Beautiful Freak
The Chemical Brothers - Surrender
The Black Crowes - The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion
Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land
Gomez - Bring It On
EMF - Schubert Dip
Oasis - What's The Story, Morning Glory
Foo Fighters - The Colour & The Shape
M People - Bizarre Fruit

These are some of my favourites.  Most are obvious, some a bit more niche.  Top 5 probably in bold.

Being young in the 90s, I don't have much experience other than what I'd have heard on the radio. So, 90s albums I've bought in the last few years that I like:

Nirvana - In Utero
Pulp - Different Class
System of a Down - System of a Down
Blur - Parklife
Radiohead - OK Computer

I find In Utero to knock shades out of Nevermind as a whole and mostly prefer Bleach to it, too.
BeN

I only started listening to music in about 1999, so I have nothing to offer...
Rodge

Oasis - What's The Story, Morning Glory
Paolo Conte- Best Of Paolo Conte
Blur- The Great Escape
Radiohead - The Bends
Blink 182- Enema Of The State

The last one is a bit of an after thought and only went in to make up 5. If my brain would engage this morning, I'd come up with something better.

If we did one based on the last 30 years, that'd be easier to compile.

I got In Utero about 12 years ago, then gave it away as it was largely unlistenable tripe. There are a few good tunes on it, but it strikes me as Kurt making it as dirgy as possible just to prove a point. Nevermind was good, but nowhere near as good as it's made out to be. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains piss all over Nirvana, IMO.

Metallia - S&M
Radiohead - OK Computer
NIN - Downward Spiral
Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill
Iron Maiden - Fear of the dark

You really are a man of great taste!

TBH I like Truth and Soul, Reality of My Surroundings and Give a Monkey a Brain equally. I think Fishbone's earliest release was the Party at Ground Zero EP in '84/'85. The first album was 'Fishbone' in '86 although it was re-released in '89 with another EP on it.

I've seen Fishbone 4 times and they are possibly the best live act I've seen. The first time I saw them was in '92 and the last was last year at King Tut's where they were filming it too. The DVD has yet to materialise - maybe you should get on the case

Shame it's only Angelo and Norwood left from the original line up

I think the songwriting also took a down turn with the departure of Kendal Jones but the most recent LPs have had a few great tracks on them too.

All those highlighted are great albums IMO. I couldn't get into Urban Hymns, I found it to depressing, which is weird considering I'm a Joy Division fan!
Stuntman

I don't really get Urban Hymns either.  Three, maybe four good songs I reckon.
