Worrying noise! On my drive home this evening I noticed the car making a distinct tapping noise on (pretty much any) application of the throttle
As I was close to home so decided to get back as gingerly as possible so I could listen more carefully. Unfortunately it appears it was not my imagination and the engine is making a worrying, and fairly loud, tapping noise.
I'm hoping this is something simple (bolt/belt tension or cam bearing) but recent past experience doesn't fill me with much hope (I've learnt to expect the worst)
A call to the garage first thing is on the cards but if any of the resident mechanical gurus have any pointers I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Olly

Is it just when throttle applied?
Is it under load (in gear) only or when pressing throttle no matter what?
I'd try just lifting bonnet and reving engine to see what you can spot. could be ancillary related (alternator, power steering pump, etc).

It's only really noticeable when revving - even lightly and happens in neutral so no load.
It may be ticking/tapping at idle but it isn't nearly as obvious

Could be oil pump related. I know of someone who had a similar problem with a noise on their ST220, which packed up rather quickly afterwards. ST220 engines aren't cheap! Get it looked at ASAP.
