Winter car rental

It says enough about my rental over the holidays that I haven't written this until now. It also says enough that I have one photo taken in the underground car park on the Parkring in Vienna and no others. It wasn't exciting. I made brief notes whilst bored of trying to speak foreign so the write-up may seem abrupt in places as I just cut and paste it from Notes.

A VW Touran. No idea what model but I think it was the Diesel something-something-dark-side. In silver.

Firstly this was the first car I've ever driven with Voodoo cruise - odd but effective; you can adjust the gap settings to safe distance or "French driver up your arse" distance. However given that if you go into the right hand lane (in Yerp, that is) and then the cruise slows you down the absolute wank engine / gearbox (more later) combo means you have to wait about 2km before you're fast enough to move back left to overtake.

Interior Materials - all good; tactile switchgear that feels like it will last without ever feeling like 1960s Bakelite but without that soft feel shit that the Audi A8 had that peeled off. This also had a touchscreen. I assume it was touchscreen or I've just been pushing at it like a demented scientist.

Right, that Gearbox - 5th to 6th hateful. Can't remember why now, but it clearly was or I wouldn't have noted it. Engaging reverse like the krypton factor - where the fuck is it? On the move the Engines shitness (weedy fucking diesel shit) requires too much stirring of what is a not all that pleasant experience. Needs auto, as do almost all cars in the 21st century. If you need 6 gears you don't need to be swapping the fuckers in a humdrum family box. On my R1 or in an M3 or a Porsche: fine. It's fun and adds some degree of control. Not required in a Touran. Or almost any other car.

Engine - fine when rolling, (it cruised at indicated 150kph in -8C snow shower no problem) but has shit flexibility: small diesels are basically awful and should be banned.

Handling: comfortable. If you're buying this kind of car for handling prowess you're in need of mental care.

Equipment - odd to have a switch for heated mirrors: thought they'd just have a sensor; Bluetooth really easy and efficient, loads of storage, auto handbrake and stop start efficient, gps speedo (mine) showed speedo to be 5% over across the range. This was most noticeable on the A-road equivalents where the limit is 90kph where I set the cruise according to the GPS and kept driving up the cars in fronts' arses. This also had the strange speedo calibration that has different gaps at low speed (5kph) to high speed (10kph).  I first experienced this on an A1 and still find it disconcerting now. Do the mph ones do it too?

So there you are. Mogadon in car form. Swallowed our three giant cases, the ubiquitous trunky, some hand luggage and winter coats and boots with no problem, drove us for 955km over 2 weeks at 45mpg average, heated seats meant the cold didn't matter and it stopped and started as requested.

I'd never buy one.

I think you should start a blog for your road tests! Always amusing ...

Voodoo cruise and a manual box just seems a bad mismatch of technology. Especially as you say in modern high end turbo on / off diesels.
