I wish I could understand Subaru's design ethos (or a lot of other Japanese manufacturers for that matter) but I think it will be one of those "because it just does" situations.

Do you remember the Seat Cupras when they first came out - they were all a horrid shade of "nick-me" green or yellow to coin a phrase of whoever at Top Gear reviewed them at the time.

I almost bought one of them - but my (then) other half insisted on something sensible..... an Astra saloon!!!
