Which would you choose?

You have around £7,000 to spend and fancy a '70s saloon. Which would you choose?

I think one of these might take a while to sell...

It is amazing what some people will pay for BL tat.

The decision would be easy!
Bob Sacamano

Neither do it for me. The Mercedes is particularly ugly and looks like something a Harley Street Pox doctor would drive to work.
gooner

It would have to be the Merc. I don't think it's at all ugly, but the Marina was and always will be shit!
Giant

I always thought the Marina was just the fastback (was it a hatch or a saloon?) and the saloon as the link above was the Ital?
Roadrunner

The Ital was the facelifted version which came out in the '80s. Warmed up shit, in other words.
Giant

I see! I should pay more attention, actually, no I shouldn't, I should rejoice in my ignorance of BL!

Blissful ignorance. Keep it that way!

I never really had a liking for old Mercs but now I could quite have something like that.
PhilD

I always try to see things from others perspectives, but I'm struggling to understand the thought process that puts you in that Marina and not the Merc!

The father of a girlfriend from a long time ago had a Merc like that. It was pretty bullet proof engine wise but there was a bus like steering wheel and what felt like about 10 turns lock to lock. It was also quite partial to a bit of rust as were most cars of the time.

Not really a good period in automotive history IMHO and I'd rather not have either unless I lived in a warm country where I might take the Merc to remind me how good modern cars are.
Nice Guy Eddie

The Merc looks like an absolute bargain if you compare to the coupe/cabrio.

The Marina on the other hand. I mean who has decided that the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon is to drive around in that shit heap.
Frank Bullitt

You'd have to be some minted idiot with a curious attraction to crap Britishness, I can see Nigel Farage buying it in a shot.

The Merc looks like a steal, a real everyday classic (who cares about the lack of mintness about it)
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

There is a Marina Owners' Club, they will be moistening their undergarments at that ...

The Marina is pretty rare in that condition. Could bring in a few quid hiring it out to TV and film companies for period pieces.

The Marina was a 2-door "coupe" or 4-door saloon. The 2-door was dropped when the face-lifted Ital came out.  Various different radiator grilles were used to denote different trim levels.
The Marina was of such quality, that even my dad who is not interested in cars at all, turned down a promotion at his employers if the Marina was to be the company car that went with the job.  As a consequence, their car policy was changed so that branch managers got the 1800 "land crab", which then progresed to the "wedgie" Princess whilst lesser staff still had to contend with the 2-door Marina coupe, then the Ital.

That's another "would you like to be shot or stabbed" question. I think I'd keep my £7k for something else.

Me too.

The best thing to irritate the Marina fan club ( and I don't mean that bloke from Last of the Summer Wine on a bike) is to buy that pristine marina, have TG test it extensively against a successful modern car built in the UK (qashqai) then come to the conclusion the best thing to do is crush it. And then crush it.
