What should I do?The MoT is up on my car the week before Christmas. It will fail, of that I have no doubt. I expect the bill to get it through would be several hundreds of pounds - maybe as much as 600 or 700. The whole car is worth not much more than that.
So my dilema is this:
1) Spend the cash to get the Toledo past it's MoT and keep it till I know what's happening with my driving instructing career.
2) Scrap the Toledo, and spend an equivalent amount on a replacement (which may well turn out to be a money-pit...)
3) Trade it in for a Fiat or Citroen (or similar) and get the scrappage alowance (although the rules for this mean I would have to do the deal the day before the MoT runs out....). The new car could then be used as a driving school car next year (Panda, C3 Picasso, or the like...)
What do you all recommend?

Sounds like a good candidate for the scrappage scheme to me. And the forum can have fun choosing your new car ...

Give the car to me.

Chuck it in for a free pre test - it may surprise you and pass.
Failing that go for the scrappage option and pick something different to what we all recommend!!!!!

Put it through a pre MOT now to see what it will cost.
I did this with the Golf, paid £50 for an MOT type inspection so that I could fix whatever was necessary in the 4 weeks before the official test was due.
You might be suprised on how well your car does, an MOT is purely an assessment of roadworthiness.

+1
I was convinced mine would need £££s of work doing but only had one advisory. Maybe do it at the end of Nov so you still have a chance to do 1,2 or 3 before MOT runs out and well before xmas.

Or maybe find out how much you'd get for scrapping it then sick it on ebay (now) with that as the starting price.
Just be as honest as possible so you don't get a numpty messing you about when they turn up to collect.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but.......BMW are doing 116i's for much cheapness with the scrappage deal.
I bet that's got you thinking?

I think I'd be tempted towards the scrappage choice in those circumstances, though the pre-MOT check sounds like a good idea too... if there's somewhere near enough to make it worthwhile.

BANGERNOMICS!
Bang another 5-600 quid on a runaround with a year's tax and ticket.

I'd vote scrappage and the Forum collective choice of replacement.

Sell it to me for next to nowt if it fails and I can get it working. Then I can give it to Jo for work and I can spend more on my new car!

Keep it, spend £X on it and then drive the car for a few more years with minimal cost - still cheaper than squandering £6K on a new car.
Or sell your nice 1.8 Toledo and buy a Panda 1.1 Active Eco - no, I didn't think so...

It's a no brainer. Buy a new car!!

How much are Omegas these days? RWD fun for not a lot. I may save up for one next year.

From next to nothing to a few grand for a nice MV6.
I'd preMOT the Toledo and if it looked too expensive find something for about £1K that had a good few years in it.
What do you think it will fail on? It shouldn't need any welding should it?

Omega? Hmmm.
Maybe I won't get a Primera GT....

There's a semi stripped Omega MV6 on sale on Pistonheads or Ebay last week.......

If I'm going to go for an Omega, I may as well get one with some kit!

No, it won't need any welding, but.....
Front pads and discs (probably); it has an exhaust blow; I'm sure there is a rear o/s suspension issue - bumps mid-bend to the left require a quick wind-off of steering lock - not quite oppo - possibly damper or drop-link; an abs sensor is not working, meaning the abs warning light is always on (brakes work fine apart from a bit of a judder on the front suggesting discs.)
The car cost me £810 last December with a year's (dodgy) ticket. I've replaced the rear discs and pads, and put two tyres on it. To date, I've done 18,000 miles in 10 months.
Trouble is, I like the car, but there are other issues with it that I'd like to get fixed - the fag lighter doesn't work so I can't use SatNav plugged into it, nor re-charge my mobile on it; the electric mirror adjustment button is u/s; the heater fan is u/s - gonna be a problem with the windscreen misting in the winter; the elctric window switches don't work to close the windows, apart freom the driver's side.
I like the 6-disc autochanger, the obc, the big boot and the good compromise between performance and economy. Oh, and it's a nice colour, being dark metallic blue (its not fucking silver)

Trouble is, the facelift cars had some pretty nasty 'wood' and I'm not sure what engines came with the base spec that included matte silver plastic on the console.

Judging by what you think it'll fail on, I'd say you're looking at 200 quid, tops to get it through.
Droplinks are about 15 quid a pop, ABS sensors are Bosch jobs and probably the same as the ones I had on Graham (Which cost me nothing). Discs and pads?

Mate of mine opted out of the company car scheme and managed to secure a mint 5 year old top spec Omega that had been used by the company chauffeur and had been serviced regularly. Chuffed to bits he was.
A year later, after a catalogue of expensive faults and failures he ditched it for pennies vowing never to go near one of the big barges again.

Most seem to be generally reliable but you did hear of a few problem ones.
What were the "expensive failures"? I'm guessing Electrical frippery?
