virgin media packageDecided to go HD so looked at changing my phone/internet/satellite tv stuff which is all with different people.
Result, keep my excellent virgin 20mbps media broadband (getting 17-18 mbps) ,go with their hd package (yes only 7 compred to skys 37 hd channels but you get espn included plus bbc i player on your tv,plus on demand tv) and phone package, overall savings over the year £700.
Sky were actually cheaper but their 20mbps broadband package only gets me 6 mbps which is a big downgrade and since I am a heavy Internet user I would really notice the decrease.

Virgin are the best hands down for internet. The top speed is now 50mbp/s and they were trialing 200 a while back. Apparently theyre struggling to upgrade their systems fast enough though.

But only if you live in an area with 'cable'

Well yeah, thats a given. They ripped up half the roads in Britain during the 90's when it took off, didnt get round to destroying the other 50%

Yes, including Cornwall, but only so "YOU LOT" can connect to it!
Most (if not all) Transatlantic Cables route via Cornwall...

Bitter? Nah...

The transatlantic cable was one of the great engineering feats when it was layed, it took several attempts but was just taken for granted soon after it was made.

We changed to Virgin a year ago we have the VIP Package:
All Sky Channels including Movies and Sport.
All the On Demand and I-player stuff
20Mb broadband, running between 18-19.5Mb
Unlimited UK calls.
V+ HD Box and a second normal box elsewhere.
All of that £90pm.
We have never had a problem with Virgin and would only go back to Sky if we moved to an area that didn't have Virgin.
Very pleased with it.

I've also been with Virgin for around a year now and it has been excellent.
Don't know what I did without it.

Thats what I am going for.Sky are actually cheaper by £5/month ,but their 'net speeds are about 1/3 and you dont get the iplayer and on demand stuff.

Plus you need to pay for a BT line or have you factored that in?

Am I alone in thinking that 90 notes a month is a tad expensive?
I get all the TV and broadband I need for 26.

I believe the Virgin Box's hard drive is twice the capacity of the Sky+ Box too.
The only thing that I would like are the HD Movie channels but that's not the end of the world.

You have to weigh up the broadband is 50meg on XL compared to 10 on m, and the amount of channels on offer. Sky movies and Sports are really expensive, about £15 a month each i think.

I'm on basic Sky broadband, I need nothing more: I don't download anything bigger than tab files and the odd patch for Doom or Unreal.

When we took the package we were on 8Mb Broadband and local free calls, both Virgin and had a normal Sky Box with everything but Sky Sport.
I have a daughter who would regularly run up £100 phone bills alone so we restricted her home phone useage.
Now we have unlimited calls, broadband that is more than twice as fast, two boxes, one recordable and HD, all channels including Sky Sport and all of the On Demand and I-Player stuff and we have saved ourselves around £35 a month, not taking into account the high phone bills just the free local call package, the high phone bills would add alot more to the monthly outlay on top too.
£90 seems alot but I think it's good value when you consider what we have and we also make good use of it too.
I can get it cheaper on Sky, but not much, but they only run around 6Mb and I don't have a BT line for the phone and internet and they aren't cable so the internet speeds aren't as good and also I don't get any interferance on the telly when there is shit weather.

That was Blarno that said that not me.
And Blarno, if you want to download more then virgin is the only way to go above 20meg.
Though a word of warning with Virgin, they have quite severe download limits during peak times, your speed can drop from 50%-75% if you download too much.

In my defence, I was mostly living abroad at the time.

The last house we stayed in had broadband of "up to 0.5MB" so basically it was dialup but we were paying for broadband speeds

Downloading porn over dial up is so frustrating!

We've got cable, so use Virgin for phone and internet connections but I have SKY HD. Seems like a good combination.
£90 is a lot, but when I add mine together it's around that number....... Ouch.
