Vauxhall Astra 1.6i EliteHire care in Scotland over the weekend.
Pros: well equipped, reasonably comfy for four, key fob (very) distantly reminded me of my GTA's.
Cons: It's a shitheap. Shoddily made and finished, awful electronic throttle, feel-free steering, stringy gearchange, stodgy handling, so-so ride, not especially economical, coarse and reluctant engine.
Just nothing to recommend it at all - one of the worst modern cars I've ever driven. I can't imagine why people buy them.

I think you must have had a bad one. I did many miles a few couple of years ago in an Astra SRI diesel 150 and it wasn't a bad old car. Yes it was a little dull, but it looked quite good with its style pack and the build was better then the golf in many areas. The steering was poor but then I can't think of a car with Electronic steering that actually provids any decent feel, its just weight.

I had a Golf last year for three days on the very same roads. It was a GT 140 TDi and although the interior was also unimpressive - the leather on the seats in particular - it was, overall, slightly better than the Astra.
The driving experience was night and day, however. Despite being a diesel the Golf's engine was more pleasant to use, and its handling, poise and controls were vastly better. I expected it to be stodgy and dull, and was pleasantly surprised.

The Astra was one of the worst cars I have ever driven too. On honeymoon in Australia I was given a (last model) 1.6 Auto Merit. Terrible.

I agree. I had a 1.6 Astra in Ireland last year and hated it. The engine was particularly hateful.
