Turkey

This is shit on an unimaginable scale.
BeN

It's depressing how the world is turning out. Eventually it will turn to apathy and that's not going to be good.

I do wonder if Recep Tayyip Erdogan is behind this, there will be quite a few changes and laws passed now that are to his benefit.

He is quoted in the paper this morning as describing the situation as "a gift from God."

Here's a challenge for Boris to prove himself with.

Some really cheap holiday deals now. Could be tempted.

If you can get a flight.

We briefly considered Turkey for August, glad we decided not to.

It's not somewhere I would have gone before this so there's no change from me!

I see they are considering bringing back the death penalty for those responsible for the coup - it is certainly a convenient way and a convenient excuse to deal severely with the opposition.

We booked a last minute deal to Bodrum in 2004 and we had a lovely little hotel with very friendly staff. The old maitre d in particular seemed to think I was his long lost son and looked after us so well (it could have been a homosexual thing, I'm not sure, different cultures etc. I know I didn't have to put out though). The boat tours round the islands were also excellent.

It is in my list for a golf holiday as the reports I get back are very positive - great courses and five star all the way, but I'll probably let things settle down a bit now.

With regard to the attempted coup; I'm a bit suspicious that this has all been a ploy from Erdogan to tighten his grip and purge the country of his enemies - I see he's wanting to bring back the death penalty. It's sad but whenever Islam gets involved in politics it doesn't end well.

Yes, looks like a false flag operation to me.

Maybe Turkey has decided to give up on the EC aspirations and turn back towards the east. It will massively impact on their economy but that will always be someone else's fault.

Turkey is a signatory to the ECHR so they may run into some legal difficulties with that.

Bearing in mind what has gone on recently and they fact that many seem to think that the coup is down to the current President anyway, I'm not so sure they would be too bothered about legalities.

I've been on holiday once many years ago and had to go there every few months for work about 5 years ago. Never a country I felt entirely comfortable in.

The secular v Islam stand off was always going to blow up at some point and whether Erdogan started this or not, he'll use it to advance the Islam side against the secular side. Frankly, Angela Merkel needs her head examined if she thinks she can somehow use Turkey to long term help her refugee issues.

Talking to a friend last night and he mentioned he was off on holiday on Sat (3am flight!!). When I asked where he replied "Turkey". He's heard nothing from the travel company so has assumed it's OK to go. He's not the luckiest person in the World so I have already started a Just Giving page to pay for his release and repatriation.

Wish Chris M a nice holiday from all of us.
