The Mighty Skoda

As my car is in the bodyshop for some repairs following a car park incident (kid reversed out of parking space into my rear three quarters - just bumper damage), I have been driving a brand new Skoda Fabia Estate Diesel. Woohoo!

First impressions; it's an ugly little beggar, with a narrow and high stance that does it no favours. The estate treatment is also a bit weird, seeming to offer little obvious increase in load space to the standard hatch. It could offer a bit more shoulder room for dogs I suppose.

However, once you're inside it's pretty good, with decent plastics and a slightly higher seating position that gives a good view out. I wasn't expecting much when I drove off in it but I was pleasantly surprised - it's really good. It only has an 89bhp diesel engine but it goes strong enough, is refined - you can hardly hear it, and it rides and turns well. I went up into Northumberland and enjoyed driving it round the lanes up there, and the last couple of days I've been up and down to Middlesbrough and it cruises nicely. So far it's averaging 64mpg. If I could get past the looks (the previous model looked much better) I'd have no problem with one of these as a daily driver.

I knew Bob was getting on a bit, but he's older than I thought!
