Seems a tad dear. Is it?

Why is it a piss take? Amazon are selling it for £740 and they're normally pretty cheap.

It can be found for under £500. On the other hand, do as I did and pay under £200 for a lightly used D70s.

That's body only for £500 surely?

I have a D80, bought new about 18 months ago, and I can assure you I paid nowhere near £740!!
IIRC, it was £549 including kit lens, Skylight filter and strap thrown in.

The body costs 566 and the lens 267 quid on amazon, I don't know what the kit lens costs however.

Unusual for stuff to be going up in price!

It's discontinued; shopping around should enable you to buy for £500 or less

Not really - the Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 lens I was planning to buy has just gone up in price by around £120 (about 25%) for the Sony mount version. I've decided not to bother and buy an old Minolta 20-210 f4 'beercan' on eBay instead.

A cheapo one I can recommend is the Sigma 28-300. I think it's costs around £200. I sold mine and I regretted it straight away as it was a useful thing on APS-C and would be just as useful, maybe more, on FF.
Another one to remember is the Tamron 55-200 at £80 or less new. It's only APS-C but it gets rave reviews.

That is expensive. I got laura a D80 for xmas - can't remember how much it was, but it was well below £400 minus lenses from Jessops. Very good value as the replacement D90 seems expensive.
Unfortunately she had to buy new Tamron (?) lenses as her previos non digital SLR lenses were too slow (shutter speed?)for the camera, or something.

I got a Tamron F4-5.6 70-300mm macro/zoom lens the other day which, if it lives up to it's billing, will lead to a Nikon 70-300mm appearing on ebay shortly!! I've been trying (and trying and trying!!) to post the link, but because it has (brackets) in it, it won't link. Sorry.

A lot of camera kit is going up in price in the UK due to the dismal exchange rate.

Thanks but I'm looking for a tele zoom with a wider max aperture. The Tamron I was looking at was f2.8 throughout the zoom range and the used Minolta beercans are f4 throughout. All my other lenses are f2.8 (or f1.7 in the case of my 50mm) and not having low light capability is really doing my head in.
