Suzuki Swift 1.3 DDiS

The Legacy was in to get MOTd yesterday, so the courtesy car on offer from one of the dealers' other brands was the Suzuki Swift 1.3 DDIS 5-door hatch. (In white!)

I experienced some thoughts of buying a used Swift Sport when I was looking to get rid of the GTI, but hadn't really considered the diesel version at all; a pity really from an economic point of view as it's fairly easy on the fuel, managing a fairly frugal 58mpg over the course of a mix of M-way and round-the-doors driving.

Not the quickest off the line, but it seems to handle fairly well and shifts along nicely once up to speed. Steering is slightly notchy for my taste, but better (IMO) than Hondas' Jazz. The main let-down is cabin noise; it suppresses the dieselly clatter well, but road noise, especially tyre roar, is very noticeable.

All in all, a capable enough wee car, but I'd need to get a pretty good discount to think of buying one.

I think that the Swift is a much under-rated car; interesting to read your views and especially comparison with the Jazz

To me the Jazz and Swift seem at the opposite ends of the "small car" spectrum.

Jazz - dull, worthy, roomy as the tardis and the ultimate practical small car. So perfectly formed for purpose. Seems to be be ought by older people.

Swift - small, bit buzzy, fun, not huge inside. Seems to be bought by younger people.

The previous model Swift Sport is great fun to drive, but not a car for longer journeys as the ride is a bit firm and the road noise is too much.  I assume the current model is better in both those areas.

Never drove the last model, so can't offer a comparison. Noise is still an issue then by the sound of it, as I commented on, but ride seems well-damped and not too "jiggly" over some of our rougher roads!

Not much of a write-up either, for which I apologise. Much of my use of the car yesterday was over an hour sitting in a traffic jam caused by rubber-neckers ogling a burning car on the opposite carriageway, the resulting discomfort in my left foot (Clutch? What's one of them, then?)  Fucktards the lot of them!

Speaking of clutch, the 'change was very slightly notchy, but crispo and slotted in easily. Only a 5-speeder too, which I felt let it down a bit it could easily manage a sixth gear.

Oh, and the Leggy sailed through the MOT with only advisories on the drop links - I'd already got them to order in the full set anyway, so no worries there.

Swifts are lovely.
