Stolen by the policeGot the text I never want to receive this morning - a theft alert from the tracking company. Sure enough, where my car had been parked last night there was just a small heap of broken glass. Rang the tracker company, they said get a contact number from the police and we'll liaise with them. Rang the police, then discovered a note on the pavement which the policeman translated. Apparently, the police saw the car had a broken window, so they removed it to a secure compound to prevent any further damage, hence the theft alert. I haven't seen it yet (the compound is right the other side of the city) but apparently one window, one mirror and the lights are gone. I suppose I should be glad it's not half way to Russia by now, but still a pain in the arse.

Shit!
Presume this was in Germany?

That's a ball ache but i guess as it's turned out quite a good service by Herr Rozzer.
I wouldn't for one moment imagine the good old british bobby doing the same thing.
Hope all is sorted out quickly.

Bloody hell! Hope the damage isn't too bad.

Bad luck chap. I take it this was the GT3?
If so, are Porsche lights very expensive ( compared to other items )?

Buggeration! Sorry to hear that Nick; hope the damage isn't too bad.

Martin

That is crap news.
However, at least the police took it away rather than leaving for others to have a go at.

Sorry to hear that, Nick. You know that I know how you feel...

Never a nice thing to experience, but at least you know it's safe. It could have been worse.

If I was going to break into a GT3, I wouldn't steal the lights.
Wheels or stereo at least.
Bad luck, but at least Das Dibble are a sensible lot.

Bad luck, that is definitely not what you wanted to hear, but like you say it could have been much worse?
I hope that they haven't caused any mechanical damage to it!

Turns out the thread title was correct - they didn't take it away and store it out of the goodness of their hearts. Feel free to guess how much it cost to get the car back ...
At least damage not as bad as I feared - one headlight, one mirror, one side window, otherwise nothing, and no bodywork damage at all. Now at Porsche Zentrum Berlin awaiting repair. Still going to be about two grand - so have to go through insurance.

€250

You need to ask them if they have quoted to repair a GT3, something that needed a light and a side mirror maybe......

Rotten news Nick, really sorry to hear that.
I've just raised my cuppa to Miss July on the forum calendar on my office desk - get well soon.

Ah, thanks, man! "him" had the right idea, but it was actually just under €350 ...

Bad luck Dr. I hpe that this is the last time you've bothered like this.
PHK72, Years ago passing cops woke me up in the middle of the night as they'd spotted that my Volvo estate (company car) had no stereo, only half a dash and bits and wires hanging about all over. They thought it'd been broken into but it was always like that.

Why would someone in Germany steal a RHD headlamp?

Sorry to hear that Nick.
Glad that it's not too serious, despite being a pain in the buttocks.

They didn't - they just broke it. It was pure mindless vandalism.
Incidentally, those who've never had a side window broken will not believe how much glass goes all over the inside of the car - both seats, the footwell, the dashboard (where no doubt some bits will find their way into the vents and rattle for the rest of the car's life) ...

It's a shame that some people have this reaction to nice cars. Hope it gets fixed quickly and to your satisfaction.

Bugger - hope it gets fixed rapidly and you can claim the recovery from the insurance.
At least it's better than a "Police Aware" sticker and leaving it to get totally trashed.

Ouch! Hope you get it sorted quickly and painlessly.
After I had a side window broken on the Avantime, I was still finding glass months later.

Are Germans that bored of the 911 shape?
Hope it's not too much hassle and it's sorted quickly.

That's evil news. Depressing and financially painful. Fingers crossed they fix it properly and find all the glass bits in the interior.
Looking at Miss July as I type.

How very unpleasent - hope the 911 doesn't suffer from the A2 problem of glass being stuck in the bottom of the door. You can never get it all out.

hope it gets fixed soon, I did have a side window busted on my Yugo, except they broke the cheap plastic surround and lifted the entire quarterlight window out in one piece, I found it under the car.

I can't believe it's going to cost £2k for 1 headlamp, 1 mirror and 1 doorglass.
Are the GT3 versions made of pure titanium or something or are cars now at the stage of motorbikes (for insurance companies) where to buy a whole bike as bits from the manufacturer would cost 6 or 7 times what it does to buy one pre-made

Cars have always been more expensive as parts than as a whole. I remember, back in the seventies when I was at Longbridge, that Unipart used to put a mark up of four times on the components supplied from the factories. As an example, a hub cap that was 50p to me, as an employee (and that was including factory profit and VAT), was about £2.50 via Unipart.

Shit luck that but at least the cops did the decent thing and took it to safety. In this country they'd probably just have given you a ticket for having only one headlamp!

I was thinking of something similar about bikes; one of the bike mags priced up a (IIRC) Kawasaki ZX600 to buy new vs. parts. New it was £5975 thereabouts; to build using parts from Kawasaki - in excess of £26,000!!!

Or more - we used to sell them a rotary seal for 50p, retail cost £19.

That's as bad as Lexus's price for a the keyless remote battery. They charged me over £8 when it was serviced whereas I bought one from a camera shop for £2.99 and later bought five for £2.50 over the internet. (What was most annoying was that I didn't realise they replaced them automatically at the service and I'd only recently had to put a new battery in it myself.)

Really? Lexus replaced my battery free of charge yesterday when it went in for it's recall work.

I can't help thinking Caterham have missed a trick there.
