Stansted and PalmerSport

As I said previously I am getting together a booking for PalmerSport for 25th August next year.

Having checked out the flight times from Easyjet, we have a problem: there is no longer a 9pm flight from Luton back to Glasgow and the last flight leaves at 7pm which is far too tight to chance.

There is a flight from Stansted at 8.45 or thereabouts which looks as if it might work but I have no idea how difficult it is to get from Bedford to Stansted at about 5.30/6pm on a Friday night.

Can anyone help?

I suspect it'll be a bloody nightmare getting over to Stansted at that time any day of the week, let alone on a Friday. Why not stopover and get the first flight the next morning? Enjoy some beers after the days racing. Winner gets the first round!

The problem would be cost for some of the guys. We already have an overnight the night before and with food, hotel, buses and flights the day is already near £1K. Some of the guys save for 2 years and struggle as it is. There are 2 members of the group who could probably pay for us all to fly down in a private jet, travel in luxury and not even notice any impact so it is a difficult one to balance. I think I would lose a couple of guys if I suggested another night away.

25th August is the day before my birthday (40th!)

Have you looked at something like an AirBnB option which might provide 2 nights for the same cost as 1 in a local house?

O.

There are 14 or 15 of us so that might be an issue.

My manor.

The M11 is invariably poor but for much of the trip might still be the best option, come off at Duxford (A505) and continue until the A1198 to Bassingbourne - take this to Caxton Gibbett and turn left on to the A428, come into St Neots at the first junction and head over to Thurleigh by coming through town (give me a wave as you will be at the end of my road) then head into Duloe and across to Thurleigh.

Where are you staying on the Friday night?

Don't carry on up the M11 until the A1303 as this is usually at a grinding halt, but if it isn't you will eventually come to Caxton Gibbett (A428/1198 junction but on the A428) which goes from two lanes to one at this point and it is an utter horror-show every night.

When I collect the DS4 from Duxford I always use the route at the top.

I think it will be the Bedford Swan which is where we stayed last time (but it will be on the Thursday night).

I will be getting firm numbers tomorrow and then booking.

Is Birmingham Airport (BHI) an option? Looks to be not much further from Bedford than Stanstead?

In terms of time I think you are probably right but it is nearer 70 miles whereas Stansted is about 50.

We have to get a bus company who will pick us up at Luton, take us to the hotel in Bedford, come back for us the next morning and take us to the Autodrome and then come back later and take us to the airport. I was trying to keep it as tight as I could geographically so that I can keep the costs in check.

EDIT - Just checked and Easyjet don't fly from Birmingham to Glasgow.

Quick google shows it's just 9 miles further to BHI than Stansted; time is about the same, a little longer to get to BHI

What are you paying per room there? I'd think you could do 2 Premier Inn nights for one night there? Or is it cheaper than I thought?

Happy to help in terms of local accomodation ideas.

FB's caravan will sleep at least 5 or you I think?

Sorry, I mis-read it as the other way around - it's not a brilliant journey but assume a minibus company will be taking your rather than driving a hire car - direct from Thurleigh, it is country roads to St Neots, up to just south of Great Paxton, the road that runs parallel to the A428 through Toseland and Yelling (it's just called the Yelling Road locally), down the 1198 to Caxton Gibbett, carry on down to the A505 at Royston than A505 all the way to the M11 - unless there is an accident the M11 south is fine on a Friday night.

I got Married at the Bedford Swan but I would stay there for this sort of trip - the Premier Inn at Kempston on the A421 is spot-on and it's easy with the new A6 Western by-pass to get to Thurleigh too, it has a nice bar on-site;

I can get the Swan for about £70 a room, single occupancy with no breakfast (PalmerSport give us that)

You have to remember that I am trying to organise 14/15 guys, get payment from them and give them all something that is relatively straightforward to understand. The simple solution is the only one.

I also can't book Flybe flights beyond March next year and the times of the flights after that can't be guaranteed.

I will explore the bus options tomorrow to see who is prepared to do what.

And I spend hours and hours on this for perhaps, a pint!

Just to show what a prick some people can be - one of the guys asked a client of his if he would like to join us. The response was that he couldn't see anything at PalmerSport which was any faster or excited him more than his RS6+, so he considered it a flippant waste of money. Wanker!

What were you thinking for Bedford to Stansted in terms of travel? Public transport your only option is to get to Bedford, go into London St Pancras, Liverpool Street (taxi, tube...) then the Stansted Express. Which is not really an option!

The only way between the two is driving in some form

^^^ Bus company - see post a few above !

Hence the question...

It would take longer but if the flight times don't work could it be worth looking at getting the train? You could pick up the East Coast Mainline at Stevenage or Peterborough or perhaps the West Coast from Milton Keynes. Booking in advance may make it similar in price to the flights. According to National Rail enquiries the journey time is about 4.5 hours which can't be far off how long the flight takes when you account for the faffing about at the airports either end.

This might be a good idea? Train to Peterborough/Wellingborough/Bedford is relatively straightforward and would be my preferred option over flying for Scotland.

Whereabouts are you travelling from/to?

Other flight options are East Midlands (not that much further than Birmingham)?

The Bedford train line does go straight through to Gatwick though.....
JohnC

We get a local coach company to do all the transport - pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel, pick us up the next morning and take us to PalmerSport and then pick us up at the end of the day and take us back to the airport.
Frank Bullitt

Depends what time you leave Thurleigh - 4pm and a coach would get you to Stansted for 6, 5pm and you can forget it!

GBB's Gatwick idea isn't at all barmy - quite a few of my Bedford-based friends use it for trips without batting an eyelid

We won't be leaving till about 5pm but we would need to be at the airport for 7 ish.

Yes, 2 hours at that time of night is perfectly doable

I'd think so, bar major road problem.

I used to use Stansted when times worked for me and reckoned that flooring it from MK I could do it in less than 90 minutes going cross country.

According to Google then it's 1hr 7 mins from Thurleigh to Stansted and you wouldn't have the hassle of finding a parking space.

I'm sure the bus company would be able to advise as well.

Try that route at 5pm and see how quick you get there - it takes you along the A428 which is solid between St Neots and Caxton Gibbett - I reckon the alternative is about 90 minutes, best part of two hours on the route shown.  Run it again at 5pm tonight!

When we took the Caravan to Thetford the other week I couldn't take the back road (too narrow in places, a coach might suffer too...) so went on the A428 - took me 50 minutes to do the 12 miles or so from St Neots to Caxton Gibbett

1 hrs 22m in at 5.28 pm tonight.

That seems hard to achieve I'll agree though.

I used to go via Ridgmont, Clophill, Shefford, Stotfold, Baldock, Buntingford, Down the A10 to Stanton then over to Bishops Stortford and then Stansted.

But not in a mini bus.

Now 1hr 15 min at 5.45pm. something closer to my route is 1hr 24 min
