Service.

Caught here. IB?

"Why?"

The RS is overdue a service, and I've been putting it off for over 15k now but it's seriously time for me to have the wallet raped..Now! Having shopped around and been given a few quotes, the cheapest is a local garage from me, that's about 30 notes cheaper than a main dealer.

"So what's the problem?" "Pick the independant"

Oh! i SOOOOO wish that to be the case, notwithstanding that RS owners when they buy secondhand are anal about where it was serviced and having a whole host of stamps that they feel is a golden crown on the previous owners love of the car.

But! Ford ain't all that when it comes to servicing an RS and quite a few within the 'scene' are loathed to even drive near a dealership.

Whatcha reckon then?

1.Ford stealership...get turned over when they say something else needs replacing..thus making me embark on 'doing a bankjob' to pay for it

..But getting the all important stamp, for sell on time.

2. Indepentant..using Ford sourced parts and having a rogue stamp?

Blarno

It's a bit far away, but there's a guy about half a mile up the road from my house who does loads of work on RSFs, including Paul and Ben's. Apparently, he's the go to guy on the RS forums. There's always 3 or 4 RSFs on his drive in various states of repair.

You can't beat a good independent mechanic, I wouldn't entrust Renault to open a tin of beans, let alone service Blue Frog.

Sounds familiar. If he's got an RS with black wheels, it's him.

I assume they'll stamp your book as well as anyone else.

I have the same quandry with the ST - Full dealer history or save about £80 and get it done by these chaps.
Blarno

FDSH means nothing, other than the previous owner had more money than sense, IMO.

I prefer plenty of stamps and rucks of paperwork. My service book only has one dealer stamp, everything else is independent.

Different strokes and all that.

If I've interpreted that comment correctly, haven't you already compromised the service history?

I'm sure it is, Woody mentioned it That's why I seem to have knowledge of such things. Knows his marbles from what I read on the net.

No. The Ford servicing schedule is all over the place, there's a myraid of different ones some at this mileage..some at that... Mine was done at 48k then for some reason 53k came into the frame followed strangely by 61k

53k was my last and as I'm on 68...My thoughts where to have it done even though they say...

.."It ain't needed until 75k..that's that big one"

Dave. It's the Ford stamps they look for and that seems about it from my knowledge of the marque?
Blarno

Mine is underdue! It's just had the 6 year/84k service with less than 48k on the clock.

Blarno

What about getting the basic Ford service (and stamp) and any further work they list get done at an independent which at the same time will double check if the work is actually required.

My MX5 has 10 main dealer stamps and two specialists and is serviced annually even with low mileage and now has a satisfying fully stamped book.  Like Blarno its just had its 12 year or 108k mile service (including second scheduled cambelt change) but only done 75k.
Apex clipper

Good points Scamps...I inquired about having the cambelts done as the book says 100k but I'm a bit loathed to let it get too near that after all it is turboteded.

£573+vat...Fvck me! It's a frigging Ford not a fezza!

Cambelt - £300 inc vat fitted:

One good thing about the MX apart from reliability, is servicing costs.  Full service and cambelt is a reasonable £275 at a MX5 Specialist.  If i recall my local main dealer wanted over £200 for a basic service.

Similar price to the Clio.

So I did it myself!

The secret is a Specialist - better and cheaper than main dealer but more knowledgeable and respected than a run of the mill independent.

I use a local independent for MOT and non-specialist jobs, a specialist for servicing to get the all important stamp - though at my cars mileage it probably makes little difference.

Just had the BMW MOT'd and only cost £200 including MOT and new front ball joints, plus fitting (not supplying) new tyres.

I would have thought that if Blarno's neighbour is acknowledged as the expert on the owners' forum, then having it serviced by him would be a plus point at resale.

True, but maybe the 100 mile drive offsets the price difference?

Where abouts in the country are you?  Pumaspeed arnt bad, ive been there twice for work done on mine, but theyre not cheap.  Both times i went they found more work that needed doing on the car and it cost me more.

The first time i asked he adjust the suspension he had just fitted and they did so, but charged me another half hours labour.  (£50 p/h i might add)

The second time they spotted a knackered CV joint and duly fixed it, they did a good job but was another hours labour plus the part.

There is a guy who used to work for pumabuild, set up his own garage, all the FRP owners rave about him.  His garage is called topgearautomotive, thinks he's in wolverhampton.

When it comes to anything automotive, £50 an hour is not bad.
