Run What Ya Brung 20/03/11

Self and 3 work colleagues are going to Santa Pod on 20th March to have a go on the 1/4 mile strip. Not done this before but looking forward to having a bit of a lark. Its 35 quid for unlimited runs so not too bad value. I'll be in the 260, also going is a Mk1 Focus RS, Focus ST and a current shape Impreza WRX/STi/whateveritis. I am quite confident I will be the slowest, I doubt I will dip below 15 sec but a low 15.something would be nice.
If anyone here wants to pop along, let me know. I think you can passenger for a tenner.

We deliberately picked 20th as it is advertised as being in association with Evo, who should be bringing some of their fast fleet and some of the staff will be there.

Working. Bugger.

I'd only embarrass myself anyway!

Also, me too as well.

I think.

You have more power than I do. 90bhp more, give or take!

Plus all the AWD gubbins, extra weight, slush-box...........

There's only one way to find out......

I would love to do this, but I don't think my insurance would allow it.

In fact - how are your cars going to be covered ? - are you assuming " it's a straight line, what could possibly go wrong ? "

I think it's technically "racing", and therefore not covered under normal policies.

But, it's a straight line - what could possibly go wrong?!?!?!

You're alright, you've got 4 wheel drive! Peet could fishtail and I could torque steer into the barrier...

FYP!
Matt

15-seconds? That really is Hi-Torq...
gonnabuildabuggy

It's just down the road from me so I might pop along if I've nothing else on.

I've done it a couple of times and from experience know that:

a) It's a bit addictive
b) It's a good way to overheat your clutch or bugger your cooling system (think it flushed out the rad weld on the GTI I had, but on the upside it highlighted a problem I wasn't aware of).
c) Your not insured on your currenty policy. It's pretty safe though as long as you're not alongside a death trap.
Blarno

If you're worried about stuffing it, you can buy trackday insurance. It's about 100 notes but it covers your arse. For the likes of me, losing an 800 quid car is no big deal. I can't see Peet being too happy at stuffing 50k's worth of Shaguar.

I want to do book a day at Outlon Park this year, depending on if i still have the car or not.
Blarno

Get it done. Just don't lift at Water Tower...
DradusContact

The tyres are ok on the car but i would want new discs and pads before i tried it.  got some ebc yellowstuffs still in the box but need the discs to go with them
Blarno

If I wasn't saving for my wedding, I'd book another trackday. All non-essential purchases are out - do you realise it's nearly 18 months since I last got a tattoo. Getting withdrawal symptoms here!
Roadsterstu

Risking no insurance. Not going mad on the amount of runs I intend to do. Four maybe, time allowing. A new clutch is about 1800 quid apparently.
PhilD

Do they do a 50-70 in 4th run?

If not, I'm out

Re: insurance.

In the old days when bike track days were a rarity, if you binned it on the circuit you got the trackside trailer to take you a few miles up the road to an un friendly corner and chuck you bike and the bits in the hedge. Then you call authorities / AA and make sure they log an RTA at that point on your bike then you do a claim form using their report. Costs you your NCB or NCB protection so you weigh up the cost of repairs first!
Roadsterstu

I have seen similar at trackdays before!

So, been and managed 6 runs. I expected it to be busier than it was actually but it wasn't too bad at all. Very little time spent queuing. Having said that, I was car number 153 and plenty arrived after me.  In addition to cars there were some true lunatics on bikes.
it really is a case of anything goes. Proper drag cars and bikes, through stripped out cars on slick tyres, to Rover 100s and Corsas, right up to GT3s and other fast road cars. The GTR Club in particular had a strong presence.
I only spotted two of Evo's cars and they didn't stick round for long, so sadly no chance to speak with them. Henry Catchpole was in the matt grey M3 and Nick Trott and his missus (assuming she was his missus) were in the red XKR.
The fastest thing I saw all day was one of the GTRs which did a quite stunning 9.87 at 145mph!!! God knows how much the owner has spent on mods to do that but it was substantially quicker than the bikes. My best was a lowly 15.6 at a heady 88mph. My performance was hindered by my inconsistent attempts to balance traction and a decent reaction time - not as easy as you might think.
Had a good drive there and back. Our party consisted of the 260, a Mk1 Focus RS, Focus ST, current shape Impreza STi and a Cooper S.  I will post some pics tomorrow.

What was the order out of those cars Roadsterstu? My guess is;
Impreza
RS
ST
You
Cooper
Roadsterstu

Impreza didn't partake due to needing an engine rebuild at only 17k miles, under warranty and is still running in. After that it was as you guessed, which was as I expected. The RS has previously dipped into the 13s ,but not yesterday.

No.  This was jus after he bought it used, from Subaru.  Warranty, thankfully.  I can't recall off the top of my head what the actual problem was.  Other than it was a BIG problem!!

Here's some pics:

Plenty of these:

Our cars:

When did you last see a Citroen BX?  Especially a pristine
16 Soupapes like this?

JamSport Focus RS with 500bhp:

Couldn't get ay more pics as I didn't replace the batteries in my camera, so snapped these few on the phone.

Sounds like a great way to spend the day...  was the 260 hard to launch then?  Unless the track was very slippery I reckon the Saxo would post similar times.  As someone once said to me a 1/4 mile time with a terminal speed over 100mph is a properly quick car.

What were your 60 feet times?
BeN

Brilliant stuff Stu.

Engine looks quite far back in the GTR

BX is so cool.

2.2272 on the best run.

Was difficult to judge the best technique. The surface is heavily coated in rubber and is so shiny it looks almost like ice when the sun shines on it. As the sun came out, the surface soaked up the heat and got quite sticky so I had real problems with axle tramp (despite the twin Bilstein shocks on the diff!) The best run was with minimal wheelspin, get it rolling and then giving it everything. I also found that there was no point wringing it out to the red line, better to change up at just over 5k and drop right back into to peak of the torque curve.
him

^^^ Better than 3.39 sec @ 27.7 MPH!!!

That BX is lucky. Most have been cannibalised, with the engines ending up in 205 GTis.
Roadsterstu

I very nearly stuck a bid on a diesel BX estate on Ebay last night!! Hadn't had enough beer, luckily.
