It's happened, oh well and I can't afford a replacement at the moment, well probably for a long while.

Bye bye my friend !!

Have I missed something here? (again!)
Humphrey The Pug

Yes my X-Box, Red Ring of Death.

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh ...... I don't have an X-box myself, but I've heard of that. A touch terminal, I believe.
gooner

Are X-Box's genuinely unrepairable when they have the red ring show up? Was it random or have you done something to break it? Either way I thought it was fixable if you know how and there seems to be loads of websites willing to show you how or give you your money back. Have a look at this site:

http://www.xbox360ringofdeath.co.uk/

I don't have an X-Box so don't know a lot in this subject but it sounds simple enough.
Humphrey The Pug

Thanks, I'll have a look.

The internet can be a wonderful thing when it comes to stuff like this. A chap I know bought 2 dead PS2s at a car boot a while back for about a tenner and I got them both working after a bit of googling and tinkering under the lids. You need to re-focus the laser on them usually and it's only a screw to adjust it.
Matt

How old is it, Humph? Microsoft have given a three-year-warranty from the date of purchase on all Xboxs I believe for this issue. Mine is just about to come out of the three year window, but fingers crossed, this one hasn't given me any trouble at all, because unlike before, my power brick is kept clear of other items and has some free air around it.
DradusContact

I sent one away for repair and it was a painless affair.  They give you a sticker and you package it up, and a bloke comes and picks it up.  Mine was back within 2 weeks, i bought a new one as i was quoted up to 6 and it was too long to be without one.  Wouldn't of waste my money if i knew how quick it would be back, especially as a new one came out just after i got it.
Humphrey The Pug

Tina has said she will buy me a new one so I'll go that route, mine is over three years old so isn't covered under the extended warranty anyway.

I've had good use out of it and considering I didn't pay for it I'm not too bothered, it was a replacement for my original X-Box that was half inched when we were burgled.

So I await a new slim one 250gb, which also means wireless internet connection so I can plug the Blu-Ray player into the internet instead.
DradusContact

The slim one is nice but remember you will need a hard drive transfer kit (£15!) for your saves, the new one has an internal hard drive thats not compatible with the old one.
Humphrey The Pug

I did read of an easy and free data transfer solution the other day, I can't remember though were I read it, nothing a bit of Googling won't sort though.

What about my online stuff do I just need to sign in as you would on say this forum, to get back online as I was?

I got Fallout New Vegas for Christmas and it's really frustrating as I've only had a little go on it and since the X-Box died I've had loads of time to myself with no one about and I haven't been able to get on the bloody thing!
DradusContact

I know of no other option than the micro$oft kit or the 3rd party versions of it, as the hard drive has a special shaped connector that wont fit anyting else.  Like most of these things they could easily give it a standard slot but then they couldnt charge you through the nost for it.  For the price of a 250gb hdd for the xbox you could buy 2 terrabyte hdd's for the pc and theyre the exact same.

New vegas is great (though buggy) are you willing to sink 100 hours into a game like me though?  If you are willing it will consume your life.
DradusContact

Thinking about it for a second, you can recover your gamertag on your new console easily enough, and any downloads you can get again since you have paid for them.  The main problem would be the saves for your games, not sure if a USB pen drive would be able to help you move them over.

Works even better with cars (profit wise!).

The X Box ventilation thing is interesting - ours has vents on the two sides and also the top and clearly says all vents must be kept clear. Then it shows a picture of it on it's side which would block one of the vents?
Humphrey The Pug

I decided to check to see if the 360 was covered under the warranty extension and spent what seemed like an age farting about with registering etc to find that it isn't.

Looking forward to a nice shiny black one (ooh er) that doesn't stick out like a sore thumb under the telly, I just hope a new one isn't launched soon, that would be just my luck.
Matt

It's unlikely as MS (and Sony) intended to have ten year lifespans on the consoles, because of the spiraling development costs.
Humphrey The Pug

Interesting as 10 years sounds along time what with the speed that technology changes.
DradusContact

Matt wrote:

Do you mean 10 years is too long or too short?

The original playstation was going from 1995 to 2001ish, the PS2 2001 to 2007ish (though there are still the odd game or two made for it even now) and the PS3 is 2007 onwards.

The original Xbox only went from 2001 to 2005 but the 360 has been running for 6 years this coming november which is good, with no sign of a replacement even being considered.
Humphrey The Pug

Have had a look on tinternet and the current 360 is due to run till 2015.
Matt

Not RROD, but there's a bug with Hitman: Blood Money.

It doesn't detect HDMI when you try to load it, but SD settings, where PAL is set to 50Hz by default. The only way to solve it is to use the AV lead that comes with the console, which I don't think I even have any more. Once that's plugged in, then you can change it to PAL-60 and then reconnect the HDMI lead.

What a bunch of arse!
DradusContact

Yeah, i know about the hitman bug, it seems silly.  I have got 1000/1000 of that, from way back in 2006.

That's lucky as my kids aren't getting a new one until 2016 at the earliest and I didn't want too much earache.

When's the wii upgrading as I was very suprised at the difference in graphics quality between them (hence going for a kinect this Chrimbo).

I really do not like the Wii, to me the graphics are no better than a PS2 plus I don't like the whole every one can join in thing, I'd much rather slump on the sofa in the corner and play a game.

Be careful with a Kinect as we got one but had to send it back as the lounge wasn't big enough, you need about 8 feet of clear space infront of the telly of two are playing and about 12 feet of clear space beside you.

+1 to the slumping thing.  Many gamers will play for ours on end, i dont want to dance round my room for 8 hours, i want to sit and not move.

The Wii is essentially a re-skinned and updated gamecube hence the shite graphics.
Humphrey The Pug

I can be fairly anti social person so I like the fact that I can be by myself, in the dark, doing what I want to do slumped in the corner in my own filth (joke) playing on my X-Box, I'm currently having withdrawal symptoms though at the moment.

I also don't like the fact that gaming in the house is no longer a thing that only I can do or are interested in, now everyone can play on a console, including a woman, what's all that about?! However the Wii was last played on months ago by anyone in our family, I told Tina that it would be a waste of money, did she listen, did she fuck!

+1

Ours was purchased boxing day last year, so impressed was Amanda by the one my parents had that we played with at theirs.  Think its been used <dozen times since then.
BeN

Our XBox now seems to have my younger brother permanently attached to it.

God knows what will happen if we got a Wii.

I got it in Play's January Sale for £7.99. Now if I can't find or borrow a lead, it won't be such a bargain if I have to spend on a darn cable. Three years on you'd think it would be patched.
Humphrey The Pug

Does anyone know if I can transfer data from old X-Box to new X-Box S using a USB-USB cable?

The old X-Box turns on it just goes funny when a game is played, when it actually needs to do a bit of work?
Matt

No. It requires a Microsoft Data Transfer kit, where one end plugs into the old hard drive and the other plugs into the new console via USB. They're around £14.99.

This was a measure to stop outside sources hacking the hard drives via USB-USB cables.

You can use a USB flash drive to transfer files though cant you?

I had read that DC but no concrete definate yes you can, I would have thought though if you can use a USB flash drive then you can use a USB-USB cable.
Matt

If you have a big enough card and your HDD data is under 16GB, then yes. If it's not that size and you have a bigger data size, I'm not sure if it will allow you transfer the data incrementally.
DradusContact

I imagine ebay must be flooded with the kits as people pay £15 to use them once.  I got one when i moved from my original 20gig to my elite, they used to be free!  I dont think the one ive got is compatible, ive lost it anyway.
Matt

If you use the USB route and not the Migration Cable, this article says you have o go to a website and authenticate your new console t accept your saves and DLC.

I take it this is what I need?:

DradusContact

I would only buy the official MS one myself Humph, it needs software to install and i wouldnt fancy using 3rd party stuff.
Humphrey The Pug

Just bought one on e-bay for £4 plus £1 p+p, doesn't say if its used or not, it's a library picture but he does say it's a Microsoft one.
Humphrey The Pug

It's here, yeahh.

Having trouble getting into my X-Box live account though, it's asked me to sign into my Windows Live account, the only reason I have one of those is due to registering the other day to see if I could get my X-Box fixed under warranty and its thrown up a random Gamer Tag that was given to me when I signed up under Windows Live.

Ideas plese how to get into my uasual account?

*edit* done it, my original account's e-mail address was missing a character, hence why I couldn't sign in.
Matt

You bought on eBay and received it the same day?
Humphrey The Pug

360 is here, ordered a couple of days ago, the data transfer cable will be next week.
Humphrey The Pug

Got the 360 up and running apart from the data from my old hard drive, it looks good, much better than the old white one, it's much better integrated under the telly as it doesn't stand out.

Only pain are the touch sensitive buttons, you only have to fart near them and it turns off or on.

Its really nice looking but i cant justify one while mine is fine.  Ive got a black one so it doesnt look as fugly.

Yep no point in upgrading for the sake of it as it's essentially the same machine just in a more modern package with a few of the downfalls of the original one ironed out, noise and overheating causing the RROD.

Does look good though.
DradusContact

I find mine to be pretty quiet with the game installed as it is.  I wonder how it can be quieter and cooler at the same time, usually you cant have both.
Humphrey The Pug

I never found the noise of the other one a problem, sure the new one is quieter though.

I believe one large fan is uses as opposed to two smaller ones and it is better placed, more cooling vents too.

Vents are cool in case you didnt know, all the best cars have them.

ps have you checked out the image i made for you in Big TC's new car thread?

Err yes I have and I wasn't going to rise to it, got the location wrong though!!

The RROD and the hateful controller are 2 reasons why I've never even considered getting an XBOX.

Paying to play the games online is another.

Who asked you?!

Anyway nothing wrong with the controller at all.
DradusContact

Yeah i like the controller, its a shame microsoft have patented the wireless so all the 3rd party ones have to be wired.
Blarno

I prefer the PS controller, always have done.

Then again, if I'm wanting to play a FPS, a control pad of any kind would be my last choice.

The controller is great, I can't get on with the PS3 one though...

...oh, and I have a HORI Arcade stick that is wireless, but you are right with the joypads?

Humph, which do you prefer, 360 or PS3 pad?
Humphrey The Pug

My daughter's boyfriend wants a PS3 as opposed to a 360 as he can't get on with the 360 controller, his hands are too small.

Didn't Microsoft to a smaller controller for the Japanese market for the original X-Box?

Humphrey The Pug wrote:

Yes, it was called the Controller-S, eventually the rest of the world got the smaller pad too by default.

I loved the original beast pad, it was ma-hoosive.

The Playstation pad is fine, its the same shape essentially as the one from the original playstation in 1994, just its now wireless and has the sticks, and the shoulder buttons are now triggers instead.  It cant be bad after all the time, but i do think the xbox one is better.
him

My brother said (he bought himself a PS3 for Xmas), that compared to the Xbox pad, in games like COD etc. the triggers are not used as such?  You use the shoulder buttons to fire. (what would be the "bumpers" on the Xbox)  Is that right?  Seems odd...

...PS, why haven't Sony put a DEMO of GT5 on the 'PSN Store' or whatever it is to download and try?

The entire PSN is truly awful.  I cant believe someone as good as sony cant come in with anything better.  Finding stuff takes forever, why does everything have to be a big pictogram?  If you want to look through a list with 400 games on, and the screen will only show you 10-20 at a time, it takes forever.

The triggers are there for games where you need to vary your input, the best example being an racing game, usually with shooting you either pull the trigger or you dont.
Humphrey The Pug

How can I find out what my old 360 is, I think it's an Elite but I don't know the hard drive size as I can't see it printed on there anywhere.

I'm going to E-Bay it as RROD ones are going for around £25-£30+ P+P and I may as well make something out of it.
him

Humphrey The Pug wrote:

Is it black?
DradusContact

Yeah Black with 120 gig is the elite, if its a white one with a 20gig hdd its just a normal system, used to be called the pro.
Humphrey The Pug

It's white, I assume it's 20gb, it doesn't say anywhere on the HDD.

I'll go with that, it's definately not the base Arcade or Core model.
DradusContact

The 20gig was replaced with a 60 after a few years, if yours is from 2007 or earlier it will likely be a 20.

Don't know, god this is like trying to keep track of Renault's ever changing spec!
Matt

And to throw further confusion in, mine is a 20GB model with an HDMI port!
Humphrey The Pug

Ok I have transferred most stuff over to my new 360 from the old hard drive apart from my gamer tag details as I sorted out my gamer tag details through X-Box Live before I got the transfer cable.

Only problem is my gamer tag details are still on the old hard drive, how can I delete them off of the hard drive?

I've tried connecting the hard drive up to the PC and re formatting it but even though I got the message that something had been detected and was now working I can't actually find the hard drive to access it.

Any ideas please as I want to flog it with my dead 360 on e-bay but obviously don't want any personal data left on there.
Humphrey The Pug

Sold it on e-Bay, I stupidly put a "buy it now" figure of £20 on, I'm quite new to e-Bay, it was snapped up in 1 minute.

I should have put it at £30, the problem is I wanted it gone quickly and there are consoles on there that are just coming up to end of auction for only 99p and there are ones for £30 so the values are all over the show, any how I'm pleased, that's what matters, £12 postage too.
DradusContact

You sold the whole thing or just the hdd for £20?  when my first one broke in 2007 i sold all the components on their own, i got about £15 just for the power leads.
Humphrey The Pug

The whole lot for £20, I know I ballsed up but hey ho, it wasn't the cheapest complete package or the most expensive, kept the controller though.
DradusContact

I need mine to explode now so i have an excuse to get a slim one.
Humphrey The Pug

DradusContact wrote:

It does look good and doesn't stand out like a sore thumb, bit dissapointed with the Standard Definition TV connection cable though, my old 360 Pro had component cables which I've kept as well, the S should have at least come with those, not too fussed with the lack of HDMI cable though as I've run out of spare slots in the telly.
