Replacement Musings 2...

My Girlfriend is after a new car. She currently has an X plate Passat estate, 1.8T.

Rules:
1 £5k max
2 Must be an estate, or at least capable of carrying a Bernese Mountain dog in the boot.
3 Must have a bit of go, at least as powerful as current car
4 No bigger than current car.
5 No MPV's

Currently no rules on manufacturer etc but I'm sure they will develop as suggestions come along.

We won't have the cash together until approx Christmas/January time so it's currently just to gather ideas, my immediate, default choice is 330i but I'm sure you can all be more imaginitive...

I put this in the Classified section originally by mistake, Dr Hrrrffrhrrfrrf has suggested 325i 330i X-type, 156 sportwagon or Mondeo ST220

Obviously the X Type should be a 4wd 2.5 or 3.0. I wonder if you could get a 156 GTA for that money ...

Prices have firmed up in the last few months so the answer is no unless it's got a dodgy past.

Im not sure which passat you have but the 3 series/ A4 boot size may be significantly smaller and easily fillable by a large dog

Although he is a large dog, he is quite happy in a relatively small boot, as long as he can lay down. When he does lay down he likes to lean against something anyway so he doesn't need acres.

Is this the bird with the bin lids who was doing your fruit in a few months ago ?

We never got closure on that episode - last I heard the forum wimmin had declared her rebuttal as some kind of worthiness challenge - a bit like the crusades but more crap and less religious

Oh - erm - Skoda Octavia VRS - can't see you getting an X-type estate for that kind of money, at least not one you would actually want to own.

To be honest, I'm amazed that people actually buy cars on the basis of dog capacity.

Have you all got spazzy dogs that can't walk ??

I recommend trading the dog in for a fish or a hamster and then buying a decent saloon.
Martin

It will be the previous model.   I had one a few years ago and it's definately bigger than a 3 series/A4/X Type etc.  It's very square backed, so is a good space.  If you're putting a dog in the back I'd guess the distance between the wheelarches and between the seat backs and rear window are the most important dimensions, not actual capacity?

Mrs M wanted a dog and I compromised by letting her have a cat.  Much simpler!

Just as well - a dog might have been a squeeze in the back of the Clubperson, or even the Surprisingly Roomy 1-series (TM).

Exactly, it would have stopped me getting two great cars

I only need the estate for the dogs and occasional load lugging really - I would have had a Boxster or an S2000 otherwise.

or train the dog to drive.

An Octavia VRS would be the previous model and based on the mk4 Golf so surely that would be a step down? Though a later model might still fit the bill.

What about an E39 530d estate, they got a lot of go and will probably be no thirstier than her passat.
