Racetrack in Wales

When did plans start for a new circuit to be built in Wales?
I can't believe I haven't read about it before.

It would be nice to see it built but I can't imagine it's really viable.
Look at Rockingham for example. I assume that it survives unaided but it can hardly be a massive draw for tourism, etc.

I believe Silverstone are doing their nut as there is much talk of taxpayer aid for this track in Wales.....

30 million according to the Beeb story.

This.

It's an idea to cure welsh unemployment, but rather than bring manufacturing to the area someone came up with a hair brained scheme to build a race track there.

People locally seem to think it will happen for some reason, despite the fact it's a long way from most of the population (unlike Silverstone).

There is a history of hair brained schemes in the Valleys.

Blaenavon, had funding to try to make it the new "Hay on Wye" as a mecca for second hand books - no-one figured the internet might kill that idea, plus of course Hay on Wye is actually both the present and new Hay on Wye.

We visited Big Pit in Blaenavon a year ago and despite this being a great tourist attraction there had been no development of the town to match it.

Wow! I recall reading something about a Welsh circuit what seems like 2 or 3 years back, and thought that nothing had become of it. Great to see that there are still plans to go ahead

Are you sure that wasn't the redevelopment of Anglesey you're thinking of?

Or I have a vague recollection of a proposal to do something to Pembrey as well.

I'll bet you 10 it never happens.

So that's 250M for the circuit and busness park (of which 50M is requested from taxpayers).

Oh, and then there's the - let's be generous and say 500M - additional infrastructure needed to get anybody there. Which the developers seem not to be mentioning? Because up a Welsh valley is not exactly prime "easy to get to" territory is it?

I had to laugh also that it is to be Common Land. Gives a whole new meaning to "enclosures"?
