Porsche 991Targa and GTS

Courtesy of my local OPC, I was offered a day out to sample the current 911 range. I think they must of thought I had an additional zero on my bank balance but its not the sort of invite you turn down is it.

The cars were

Targa

I was lucky to be handed the keys to a Targa as I love the look of these and aesthetically in my opinion the finest looking of the current 991's save the RS.

This was only a 3.4 with PDK and 4 wheel drive. So interesting to compare later in the day with the faster GTS. The interior was a little disappointing on entering the cabin as it felt no posher then a boggo Cayman some 50k cheaper. First thing was to remove the roof which is complete theatre

On the move there is very little buffering. Apparently the first 991 Targas to come out were poor and customer complaints led to a plastic spoiler going over the front screen to protect the occupants better. The ride was spot on and far nicer then the bone shaker ride in my 993.

PDK was spot on as always and when put into Sport Plus gives a really nice kick in the back as you change gear. Performace wise with the extra weight of the targa top, 4wd and only small engine it wasn't really fast but enough for road use and I guess most people would be happy but with a 911 you kind of want to be scared a little more then this could.

GTS - I'll get it out there, if I could have one car as my everydayer, I think this would have to be it. The ride was a far bit firmer then the standard car but the handling was spot on and the noise so was so good I had to take a detour to the Hindhead tunnel and blast through at 8000rpm.

The interior in GTS spec lifts the car a great deal over standard with carbon fibre, alcantara and red stitching galore. My only complaint was the car felt rather wide when on minor roads but otherwise I loved it. Performance wise 400 odd HP was enough to make you sweat a little and the overtaking performance epic. 4 and 5 car overtakes were carried out in seconds.

Big Blue

Nice.

I agree on the Targa: best looking 911 for a long time
Martin

Both fantastic cars.  I love the 991, it looks worth the extra over a Cayman/Boxster which the previous model never did unless it was a Turbo or GT3.   Not surprised the GTS sounded great / a lot better as the (standard) Sports Exhaust makes a big difference.

Red stiching does look great!

Top blag! And an epic sound in the tunnel.

I see they went for the full on stealth bomber spec on the GTS - black with black wheels and black interior. Suits it.

The targa is fantastic looking .

Excellent stuff and great tunnel action!

Top blag indeed! The Tara looks nice in that blue though I'm not so keen o  the wheels. The GTS looks great too but again I'm not a fan of the wheels being black on a black car. The sound is brilliant. As is the evil laugh in your video!

Nice write up. I'd be very happy with either, but like most would change the wheels on both. Were you able to test how much camping gear and bricks would fit in?

I agree. It is probably my favourite of all the 991's in looks terms.

You look rather happy, perhaps unsurprisingly!  What a great opportunity.  I agree that the Targa is lovely and would be a great choice with the larger engine.

The Targa looks absolutely lovely, I really like the silver details on a blue car. It sets itself aside nicely from the mainstream 911's - I'd have one, with a lottery win.

The GTS looks somewhat Barry'd in that colour with those wheels  - in fact it looks like Barry and Kevin both did a few things to it, then dipped it in crude oil. Not a fan. Some modern Porsches are heading a little this way - they need to find some clean classic lines again and stop fiddling with details. Do you really need gangster glass on little windows like those? Do 911 owners crave the "van" look? The rear wiper is a mess too, buy some RainX.  I know they are basically very similar but the instant impact to me of those two cars above is very different.

Great stuff ed, sounds mega in that video

Exactly my thoughts. Also don't like the badging - hopefully one could delete all except the "PORSCHE" script

Bit personal!

Both those 911s looked fantastic. I know Porsche are often maligned for the lack of creativity shown by the designers of their new models but the current 911 does just look right and it's difficult to criticise Porsche for how it's turned out. I really like the Targa model, it's easily the one I'd choose if I were fortunate enough to be making such a choice. I held that opinion well before I saw the balletic performance of the roof mechanism.

I saw a GTS yesterday - it was yellow, so not the best colour, but had centre lock wheels and a small wing above the engine cover. Given the crazy speculator driven market for (and hence unavailability of) the GT3 models, it would be my choice from the current range.
Michael

What a great experience! I don't like the colour combination for that GTS but a lovely looking car nonetheless. The Targa is magnificent but part of me thinks it goes to a lot of trouble to remove not a lot of roof - still looks the business.

That was in response to the "weight blunting it" (the performance)
