porsche 991 3.0 s

With the uncertainty of the gt3 situation I found myself looking a the forthcoming gts as an alternative if I'm not lucky with my gt3 quest.
But I had not yet experienced the new turbo engine 911s,so a quick call to tewksbury had me in a car for an hour this afternoon.
Car was a pdk cabriolet without any chassis spec bits (as there are quite a few options you can add to a 991 chassis).
Drove over in the gt4 so could make a direct comparison.

Weather is very wet and roads very greasy ,and I mention this because the traction of the 911 was incredible,I mean you would have sworn it was 4wd with winter tyres on,astonishing stuff.I could use full throttle and the car just went ,the gt4 would have been squirming all over the road.

first test was car in auto mode ,how does the engine sound ? Pretty good actually,it sounds like a 911 and does so throughout its rev range,whereas for example I find the gt4 sounds quite agricultural below 4000 rpm.It does not quite sing at the top end like the n/a engines .
Then the real critical factor ...is there lag ? Well hard to say,in auto mode there is a delay when you floor it,but I think that is more the gearbox than the engine,switch to manual mode and I barely noticed any,definitely after say 1500 there was none.I would say it is incredibly impressive for a turbo engine ,power delivery was linear which I like,no sudden spike to upset the balance of the car.

It is very quick, I would say it sits between the gt4 and say the dbs performance wise,it doesn't have that shit your pants acceleration the dbs,gallardo and 997 turbo had .
Overall a fantastic car,significantly quicker than the gt4 over the road,more traction in the conditions and better ride meant it was not moving around as much following cambers etc,but was it more fun ???
As good as the pdk is that magic is not there you get with the manual,the gt4 engine is also more exciting and better sounding once you get past 4k revs.
I think the gts will be very formidable ,especially with the rws option.but I wonder if the 20mm drop in suspension will ruin the ride.

Obviously very different ,the 911 is a truly everyday car,offering a level of comfort,refinement and speed the gt4 cant match ,but the 911 can't match the gt4's involvement.

Interesting stuff.  Are you tempted by a 4WD version of this 991.2 at all?  I suspect a 4GTS would be pretty darn good all of the time.

Are you thinking of moving on from the GT4?

Let me know if you are as I quite fancy one, not sure if I can afford one but without paying a massive OPC premium and the right sort of funding who knows..

Test was specifically to determine if no gt3 ,then a c4gts as a more useable alternative.The 4wd is deeply alluring in terms of using the car in the sort of weather we have had here recently and dealing with roads..which you know .

I need to try a couple of other cars though ,a specced up '991 c4s gts '(ridiculous mouthful) price wise brings it up against some pretty tempting almost new stuff.

I imagine that most people will be scrambling for the Manual GT3 so if you commit early to a pdk version do you reckon you might get more chance of being allocated one?

Having driven a N/A GTS last year I can confirm its a great thing and has me scanning the classifieds to see how cheap they've become. Unfortunately they don't seem to depreciate at all and means that you're talking new R8 money

If anything the engine is just hitting 4k miles and has loosened up noticably.

But I'm getting old and decrepit.


I smashed my left hand side up a few years ago and am having issues with my left hip which means I am going to have to not buy manual cars anymore,(unless they have a clutch like butter as the gallardo did)

yes,highly sort after those,there are only 2 c4sgts for sale I can see .Last n/a engined non motorsport 911...probably hold its value incredibly well.

my opc will take a deposit for may delivery ,but will switch it to a gt3 if I get an allocation ,and if I don't  get the gt3 and don't fancy the gts then I can get the deposit back in full.
