Piquet junior: saint in human form?

I note that Nelsinho is having a good grumble to anyone who'll listen:

http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=39251

I also wondered what people thought.  Comments about him being the real victim, and that he only did what he did so that other drivers wouldn't have to.  I also note that he describes himself as being at the start of his career.  Not sure I agree there either.

So, what do we think?

Obnoxious spoilt brat. Just hope one of the new F1 teams isn't dumb enough to employ him.

Took the words right off my keyboard. He seems to be portraying himself as a frightened child during his time at Renault, which is ridiculous. He's a grown man who ought to be capable of making his own decisions, knowing right from wrong and getting his priorities straight. I don't know much about Piquet Sr but I have heard rumblings of skewed morals there, so perhaps it's filtered down to Jr.

I'll be incredulous if any of the new teams touch him. There are a fair few quality drivers on the market for 2010, after all. His only chance of ever making it back to F1 would be going to a respected series like CART or IRL or whatever it's called these days, or sports cars, or even the WRC, and winning some championships. Then in about five years' time we could see an older, wiser Piquet back in F1.
Martin

Completely agree with all the points made and hope he doesn't get a F1 seat when there must be loads of more deserving drivers (from a performance point of view as well) out there.

All he can offer is some sponsorship and publicity.

+ another one.

It's almost like the saga with Peter and Katie that is played out in the Sun.

It's always in the press and it's always someone elses fault, I am the wronged one, this is my side of the story and the truth, oh woe is me and so on and so forth.

You've made your bed now lie in it.
Sav

You only have to look at his junior career to see why he has ever progressed in motorsport, he drove for his dad's team for almost all of the time - in fact 'Piquet Sports' was actually set up soley for Piquet Jr. So nobody ever really wanted him, in GP2 he was average and managed to crash a lot.

Him and his dad are pour sour grapes, recently he said that the only reason why he didn't beat Hamilton was because of reliability issues in 2006, and Alonso controlled the whole Renault team (in 2007 I would have believed that.     ). I have lost respect I had for Nelson Snr, his son is a crap racing driver and both of them need to take of their rose-tinted glasses.

Yeah right sunshine, more like you wanted to create a mess because you got dumped due to being dire.

Piquet is testing a NASCAR truck soon: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79295

His dad is probably paying the team, and in NASCAR you can disguise crashing quite easily. If he couldn't handle F1, its unlikely that he will ever make it to the top NASCAR series (Sprint Cup).

Overall, he's a shit driver. IndyCar and NASCAR drivers will slaughter him.

Sav, for a comparative youngster, you have summed up the situation amazingly well.  A careeer in journalist becons, maybe?
Well done

I've pointed out his "shitness" many times. This was the only way he was getting on the back page: by spilling some dirt.

So he had no honour in binning his car on purpose during a race instead of telling Flav "no" and now he has no honour in keeping that little secret to himself. I wouldn't employ him to make my coffee.

Re: Piquet senior. Dad's are always starry eyed about their sons and their sons' abilities being a reflection on them as dads. He's done all he can to make sure his son had a racing career at the top level, much like Andy Murray's mum did the same for him. However there comes a time when dad has to realise his son is a man and leave him to sink or swim after setting him up in this manner. Piquet should find some kart drivers in some backstreet and put a load of effort into them if he wants respect.

Papa Hamilton should do likewise: did you see him holding the umbrella on the grid in Suzuka and tapping Lewis on the shoulder when Brundle arrived? Lewis is talking to his engineer, FFS. No amount of TV PR is as important as that! I swore loudly at the TV. To be fair to Hamilton he has matured a bit and isn't such the horrendously conceited wanker he was. Just wish his dad would sit back and enjoy the weekends rather than try to be a part of it.

I would love to know what the team really think about him always hanging around?
simonp

What can I say that hasn't already been said? I agree with all of the above. The kid's just a puppet and Nelson Sr is the one with his hand up the arse working the controls. He'd have gotten nowhere without daddy's help and so just does whatever he's told. I'm sure Nelson Sr would've known all about the planned crash as well if it had been planned before the race as suggested, as junior wouldn't have done it off his own back.

We all know F1 is as corrupt as a sport can get, but to go blabbing about it to the press isn't on. I hope he never works again (well, maybe flipping burgers might be OK!).

Indeed, or perhaps Lewis Hamilton's biographer?

What sort of pillock crashes on team orders anyway?

Exactly. It's being revealed as the sort of petty bandit that does that sort of thing that means he will never be taken seriously in European racing again. Imagine the tifosi giving him the bird because Massa lost a title; imagine the suspicion of his team mates; imaginee the other racers attitude towards him. He should have just shut the f**k up; learned to drive in another series and come back a bit better with his humongous sponsor cash and lived the F1 life.

Vile little worm.

Like Button's dad does? John Button always seems to be at the GPs, but he doesn't push himself into the limelight like Hammy Snr seems to love to do.

As for Piquet, Nelson Snr seems to have been the architect of his 'rise', and now also for his downfall. Junior should now go and do something else...

I didn't want to point that out, but that was the inferrence. JB snr just looks like he's looking for the next drink and shag, and if you asked me what I'd like to be doing at his age if my son was an international sports star I'd have trouble coming up with a different game plan

Seems like he's trying out for pickup truck racing in the USA now.

I always get the impression that those sorts of racing are quite, er, manly over there so I wonder if his friendship with Dorothy will go down, as it were.

Wossat mean then?

If I have to explain, you don't want to know.
Big TC

I didn't know Piquet Jnr was friends with Dorothy - is it true. I mean, has it been in The News Of The World, or somesuch? (I don't read newspapers so may well have missed it......)
TimR

Er, didn't The Great Flav mention it in passing at the beginning of the 'Racegate' scandal?

I don't remember any massive denials from the crashy one.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Interesting, because 20 or so years ago, Piquet Sr tried to start the same rumour about Senna.

Oh yes, I remember now. It was all a bit of schoolboy childishness, wasn't it?
TimR

Dunno (or care really).

I don't remember there being any big denial from the Piquets though, that's all.
