Pier of the year. They said on the radio this morning that Saltburn pier is pier of the year.
I don't know who decided or what it all means but it is a nice pier in a wonderful place.
I've probably posted some of these pictures before but I do love this place and if you get the chance you should go.

I bet Bournemouth is reeling! Their pier has a (shabby) theatre

I don't know Cromer Pier, I've have to Google it. This one at Saltburn used to be longer until it was hit by a ship. It only has a building at the land end...
which has 2p falls and the like in it. Another point of interest is the water powered inclined railway lift opposite. It's closed in this shot but you can see it and the little booth at the top of the bank too. It's a wonderful thing.

Those buildings look really nice and well maintained. Why are most piers so "shabby" as Matt so succinctly put it?
Nice captures too Alan.

Probably because piers are seen as being a bit 'low rent', a view maintained by many that are houses to outdated arcade machines. I quite like Paignton Pier, but the Bournemouth one looked like it needed a lick of white paint to brighten up that nicotene yellow colour they're currently using.

I think the Saltburn one must have been done up in the last few years as it didn't look as nice as that when I went and I think it was closed. The railway was working though and is interesting.

Home sweet home
Lovely pictures Alan, we were there a few weeks ago and the breakers were utterly awesome - the sea looked like it was boiling!
Saltburn is great, the seniors school being named after the cliffs just out of shot - 'Huntcliff' - you can imagine what a bunch of 15 year old boys from the school a few miles away referred to is as

Shouldn't that be Piers IS seen as being a bit low rent. Though I thought he was supposed to be posh ...

"the sea looked like it was boiling"
It is nice to see the sea like that but I like it at low tide. As you know the tide goes out an amazingly long way and its easily possible
to walk beyond the end of the pier.
I download the tide timetables so I like to know when high and low tide are.
Saltburn is an amazing place and other attractions, apart from the beach, the pier, the lift and the 2p falls, include Alessis restaurant,
a fish a chip shop, a nice tea / cake place, a pet shop, a decent electrical store and...the kiosk where they'll make you a milk shake
using a chocie bar from a list that's longer than the beach.
