I've had the pleasure of seeing a Pikes Peak Quattro in action at Shelsley Walsh.  I was standing right next to it as it took off.  The noise was amazing, it sort of squatted for a microsecond and then just shot off into the distance.  I'll try and dig out the photo I have somewhere.

For me, the RAC rally of 1985 was a classic, in that it saw the debut of the Metro 6R4 (one of which came third in the hands of the late, great Tony Pond) and the Lancia Delta S4 (one of which won in the hands of the late, great Henri Toivonen) and had a couple of the Audi Quattro E2 - the version before the shortened 'Sport' version, I believe.

Me and a mate followed that rally around for 4 days and nights in an Escort van!

The Audi's wastegate whistled like a boiling kettle, the Lancia whistled and banged and belched flames (no doubt due to its turbo/supercharged engine, whereas the Metro made an incredibly loud bark. It's sound was reminescent of the Lancia Stratos... There were still a few Manta 400s around too, but they were absolutely nowhere
