RDQ Exhaust Noise RecordingsI don't want to hijack Racing's post so I have starte this.
Found a clip of someone doing a drive-by in a Legacy. Mine sounds pretty similar but maybe a bit louder. Enjoy.

Your tailpipes are cleaner than the other Compact!

That does have a particularly nice rasp to it. I must get around to actually doing mine but I don't know what to record it with - will probably have to be with the phone as I don't have a DVD camcorder.

I did mine on a digital camera using the movie mode.

Efficiency is the name of the game. I could have got my video camera, recorded it, downloaded it, uploaded it etc etc. The better option was to do a quick search, copy the url and post away!!!

Done mine today. I've not heard it outside the car and I am quite pleased with the reults of the Prodrive boxes. It sounds awesome in the car when the variable valve timing switches cam profile.

I was rather pleased with it myself. The Clio sounds good too - I have heard one or two around here making a nice noise when someone is giving it a good caning!

Hopefully, the sound quality of my digicam will be better. I'm gonna get the missus to stand by the side of the road whilst I hurtle past. Should hear the induction roar, too.
I've always wondered if a SpecB with turbos sounded like a 911?

There have been a few people put twin turbos on the n/a3.0 and they are perfectly reliable I am told although I have never heard one.
|
Blarno
|
Indeed, when I had my Legacy Turbo, I always wanted to drop a turbo'd H6 in it.

The Legacy does sound really good - not what you expect from a practical estate! Blarno, I thought your Clio had two exhausts sticking out the middle?

The Legacy does sound rather fine.
Blarno's Clio is a 172 Cup - the twin central exhausts appeared on the 182.

You can hear the valve cut in not long after starting, and then being opened again manually before being revved. Alas, the volume starts to exceed what the camera can cope with.
I have to get a drive-by done!

The RS4 sounds seriously menacing.

The RS4 sounds different to what I was expecting having heard them woofle past countless times. It sounds really smooth but with a very metallic edge. I think the drive by will be more what I'm used to hearing.

There will have been a shedload of echo in the garage.

A genuine smile-out-loud here too! I believe the RS4 and R8 have different sonic characteristics, though only have second-hand experience of the latter. The exhaust is, I believe, not valved, whereas the RS4's sport mode allows you to shut off 90% of the exhaust sound, or let it all through. The effect is marked, and I reckon all 'performance' engines (whatever that might mean) should do likewise.
The woofle is more of a mid-range thing, and gives of its best under full accelerative load between3 and 4k in top, or under a trailing throttle from 4.5k down to three in 2nd or 3rd. But the top end is both smooth and 'hard', although the aural snapshots I've heard of the new M3's V8 unquestionably sound 'harder.'
I'm wondering how to persuade Mrs 12th to stand by the roadside whilst I do a full-bore 1st to 2nd to 3rd. She may, righteously, consider me a wee bit sad. But I totally want to...

The Beast sounds as epic as I had remembered, Simon (helped no doubt by the refresher in the RS4 that Colin borrowed earlier this year.)

I'll get around to doing mine too, but there have been a few BMW 2.5's here already. I am thinking of trying to fit my old K&N filter so that might make it sound fruitier.

Here we have the in-car recording of Blue Beastie. It's amazing how well a digicam fits underneath the passenger headrest! The video is a bit lengthy, basically it's most of my thrash home from my Dad's house. Sound quality isn't too bad, either.
EDIT: It didn't record for as long as I thought. It missed the best, most noisy part out! At least the induction noise is audible.
Drive-by next!

That sounds great Blarno, more so as the revs rise.

Well, here's the best car you'll hear in this thread
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOOYcNl6SdQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nwo7s1S5fGo
It so needs an exhaust and I think I'll do some overtime to get Lionel a decent system. I quite fancy twin exits, even though I wasn't always a fan. Think they'd look different on a 306, as most have single ovals or circle exits.
|
Martin
|
Mike - That video clip is genius! It does sound like the car is stuttering when you rev it though, what's that all about?
The Legacy sounds fantastic, not what I expected at all. The prodrive exhaust was a great buy as it is not too loud, but just about right.
I think the RS4 needs to be done again out in the open, it sounds too smooth and not exciting enough in that clip. I've heard enough on the road and on youtube to know it can sound a lot better.
Matt - I thought yours was the petrol engined 306? It sounds like a bloody diesel when it starts up!
Who was driving the Murcielago? They forced that Passat off onto the grass
Blarno - The Clio sounds better than I thought it would, but whats with the soft toy on the dash and something swinging from the mirror. It looks very much like FG to me, certainly doesn't add to the driving pleasure
|
Martin
|
I've been scouring youtube so I don't have to charge up my video camera!
This gives you an idea as to what a 130 sounds like from inside, although I don't think it quite does it justice. You need to drop the back windows to get the full effect!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmRdvz-PS6Y
Obviously not really one for the public highway, but you can't do this in your S3, Focus ST, Astra VXR or Golf GTI.....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZAJT1Iiw-Y&feature=related
A bit of a long clip, but I like watching the 911 pull away down the straights (although not quite as quickly as you would have thought) but be caught eventually about 4 mins in!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6OnDvSmhmQ&feature=related
I might do mine eventually!

Martin. That is Monkey from the PG Tips adverts. As a massive tea drinker, he is my hero! The dangly thing is a Pongo air freshener. It doesn't add to the driving pleasure, apart from masking the smell of my farts...

All FG though!!!

I'd hardly call a stuffed monkey FG. And an air freshener is essential in any of my cars!
Monkey is light. His name is Monkey Cup. (He has stiffer suspension and no ABS)

Thank you. I enjoy being childish at times. Have to admit my chrome exhaust is shinier than everyones elses!
I assume the stutter is coming from the fact that I was revving it from between 3K and 5K rpm quickly, so spooling the turbo and not letting it spool down again before revving again, hence the stutter.
Only a guess. Doesn't do it on the move and I don't make a habit of revving it like that anyway so i'm not unduely worried.
|
Matt

Yes, my 306 does sound a bit diesely when starting and that's enough to put me off a real one!

I know. It's practically a Morris Minor, isn't it?
I have a drive-by, but it's almost all from in front, and I run into the rev limiter in 2nd because my mind is half on what the footage will be like. It seems to get to 72 (limit in 2nd) quite sharpish. Will try to do a better one, as the road where we did it isn't as quiet as it could be.

That looks like a brilliant road, Michael. And of course the car sounds great!
It's a shame that a small microphone is unable to convey how opening the rear quarterlights really lets you enjoy the rasp from the exhaust.

It is a brilliant stretch of road. I've no idea what that creaking is. I think it's the camera moving around while clamped in the headrest but it doesn't sound like that in the car.

Can't say I noticed the creaking. The mic on my camera seems to have amplified small sounds enormously, such as the indicator tick.

I'm obviously not a natural, born cameraman. I did an in-car bit yesterday afternoon, and trimmed off the excess front and back, leaving a 102 MB file. Photobucket's maximum videofile size? 100 MB...
This is the run-into-the-limiter-in-2nd run, clearly leaving all the interesting noise behind it. Arse. I repositioned Mrs 12th for the one done on Sunday with here nearer to the garage, and proceeded to get the same thing in first. Spielberg I aint...

I'm going to have to wait until I get home to see this properly. My crappy old Mac at work has difficulty dealing with video content in a smooth way, or in any way in fact.
It may also have something to do with the fact that the internet connection here seems to be more 'thin thread' than 'broadband'.

You could even cut a bit out of the other side of your rear bumper, save an old bog roll tube, squash it down to match the real exhaust and cover it in some more foil to make everyone think you have a 335d!

The only problem being his exhaust is squashed and point apologetically downwards.....

Cut a section from a drainpipe and paint it with Silver Smoothrite, that should do the trick. Even better if he cuts the end of it the current system first.
