Not a 1.5 Impreza!My Legacy went in for its 30k mile service this morning and I was expecting the usual dull 1.5 Impreza as my courtesy car.
Not so this morning. The lady in front of me grabbed the Subaru Justy (thank goodness) which left me a choice of Daihatsu Sirion or Materia. I chose the Materia, purely because it looks so different.
The interior is comfortable but basic but does have a decent stereo and AC. The central mounted instruments are hard to read at times but boy is there a lot of room inside.
I was surprised at its get up and go. OK it's not fast but it is quite perky enough for the size of car. Motorway cruising speed is easliy obtainable but there is a resonant booming noise from the engine at tjhis sort of speed - it could do with another ratio. Handling is comedic with massive amounts of roll - on roundabouts you think the inside rear wheel is going to cock its leg like a dog it rolls that much. The ride is excellent though and it soaked up all the bumps on the road to the stables. Its only real let down is the gear change. The shift feels like it is dipped in treacle and it just doesn't want to be moved at all. Considering the age group of people this car is aimed at then I am suprised at how hard it is. I found myself totally guessing where to put the lever in order to change.
Overall if you can get over the looks, I quite like it despite the change although my wife couldn't stop laughing.

Due to the poxy netnannything we have at work, I don't even know if you've posted a picture!
Still, by the sound of it, the Materia is on a par with the Forester I had (while the parking sensors were fitted on mine) in terms of roll and road-holding - namely, rubbish!!

Its odd, as a kid I always knew what every car on the road was, its 0-60 time and top speed, price etc. When you told me you had a Daihatsu Materia I had no idea what the hell it was and still don't think I have ever seen one now Ben has posted a picture.
