New XJ - test sit

Well a test sit at Goodwood rather than a drive.

I know that Racing made reference to the new XJ in his Goodwood thread and said that it didn't look good in the metal. Well I've got to disagree. It's a big car but it looked great in black in a menacing and yet refined way. The last XKR always reminded me of "refined menace" and I think they've pulled that off with the new XJ, as long as it's in a dark colour.

But the piece de resistance is that interior. It is to die for. The centre tunnel is high and that, combined with deep set seats, narrowish glass area and view down the long bonnet, means that it feels like sitting in one's own cocoon of opulence. Or perhaps, taking the Goodwood theme, you can imagine sitting in your Spitfire, hands resting gently on the throttles, staring out along that bonnet and towards the Hun in your sights.

EDIT - oops, this ought to be in "Test Driven"....

Yep, Jag are onto a winner here in my view. Whatever people think of it externally, as soon as they sit in one, they will be sold.

Pretty much my thoughts when I sat in one a few weeks ago (comments in the XJ thread), it is fab inside.  Jaguars only problem will be when people go to look at the XF and have a quick look at the new XJ as it is soooo much better inside.
Racing

Disagree all you like. But my first impressions of the exterior remain (a) massive; (b) Citroen; (c) rear is just as ugly as in the photos and the headlights still look small and piggy - looks like the bonnet has melted over them.

And as for the interior - well there's lots of very nice leather and the overall design is well integrated, especially in the back, but you've got to admit that on the dashboard it seemed to have an awful lot of what looked like black bakelite trim and some very retro detailing like those eyeball vents that just look out of place - like they'd been purloined from some 50s Americana. Plus a seriously naff dash clock that's escaped from a Chinese concept car. Not sold on the computer screen graphic instruments either - too techy and somehow looks rather cheap.

The interior of the Ghost on the other hand looked very largely gorgeous through the open window.

Citroen struck me from the photos as well.

It's not a proper Jag - could you see Phil and Grant tooling round in one

I should add that the Citroen bit isn't a criticism - I rather like the C6 - but just an observation of what the car looks like.

Until they realise a base XJ is £20k more expensive than an XF.

And that XF still knocks the shit out of anything else under £50k.

In what way does it 'knock the shit' (a very strong statement for a change!!) out of the competition?  In terms of showroom theatre, maybe, but you'd soon get bored of that.

Don't get me wrong, it's very nice inside, but not better than everything else under £50k.

Only my opinion of course, but I have spent some time in one and had a good look at all the competition

Is £20k the difference between a top of the range XF and a base XJ?

Autocar still has the prices for the old XJ but the XF runs from £33.2k to £59.9K.

Yes it is.

Model for model, XJ is roughly £20k more expensive than the XF.

Just been on the Jaguar website and they have prices for the new XJ.

3.0 V6 Luxury - £52,500

Looking at the diesels, prices rise to £56k for a Premium Luxury and £63k for a Portfolio.  Top of the range is the Supersport LWB (supercharged) for £88k

OK, that's £20k more than a base XF for a base XJ, but isn't the XJ better equipped?  The base XJ gets Xenons, panoramic roof, HD Sat Nav, heated memory seats and a whole lot more.

The gap between a top of the range XF diesel and bottom of the range XJ diesel is £12k.  Quite a bit, but worth it if you can afford it.

We will have to agree to disagree then Peet  (not for the first time   ), as it's just our opinion.  I think Homebase is vastly superior to B&Q, but that doesn't mean it's 100% unbiased fact.....!!

I've been in my bosses (temporary) 2.7d Premium Luxury a few times now and as I said, it's very nice but not mind blowing and/or much better than anything else.  After having it for 6 months, he hasn't chosen one and isn't very keen overall, so I'm not alone.

Even Autocar, lovers of all things Jaguar, said that the XF had inconsistent quality when compared to the 530d and the gimmicky bits are a matter of taste.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be more than happy with the XF 3.0D S I parked next to at Gaydon the other week, but I'd be equally as happy with a 530d.

You've lost me with the

Ah, I loved my S Type and I think I'd have another but the XJ will be just too big for me regardless of how good / lovely it is but an XF might be possible at some point, if I can get myself out of roadsters for a while again.

If these new Jags drive and ride as good as my S did I'd be very happy.
