New Camera

I have just sold most of my DSLR gear on EBay as it doesn't get used enough to justify keeping it.

I have bought a bridge camera to replace it:-

As it has more range than all of my old lenses then hopefully it will get some more use. It seems to take decent pictures and has a manual zoom control which is unique to the Fuji which is essential IMO.

Dog v2.0 is a Border Terrier?

It belongs to a tenant of mine and is a Border x Lakeland.

Me likey (the dog, that is!).

Bloody hell, it takes BIG pictures

Seems like the camera has a very good feature set and the output seems close enough to SLR standard as to make no odds. Even has nice DOF.
Hope you get good use from it.

They look good... did you use the "dog" scene mode for those shots?

I am still undecided whether to go with a bridge camera or a DSLR, to be honest I doubt I would use a DSLR enough to warrant the expense over a bridge camera.

How big is the sensor?

Sorry, I have only just seen this for some reason. The photo was taken in EXR Auto - I hadn't got around to reading the manual to discover the dog mode!

The sensor is stupidly large at something like 16 mega pixels but I haven't noticed any noise.

I took loads of photos of the horses this weekend using the Sport mode and did a bit of practice with burst mode. Most of them have turned out pretty good.

It takes pictures just as good as my old DSLR did but is a lot more convenient to carry around.

I'm really hankering after a DSLR at the moment.  I have a Finepix S5700 at the moment and have never really been happy with it.  It always seems to horrendously over-expose in auto mode and there is a fair bit of noise.  The most frustrating thing is just the "flat" images it produces - I feel that much of the depth of a scene is lost.  I can't quite put my finger on it but it just disappoints almost every time I use it.

I am sorely tempted by a Nikon D3100 but finding the spare 350-400 quid is something of a sticking point for me at the minute.  6 months interest free at Jessop's,  currently, however.

Nice pics but I take it you had to reduce the quality in order to post on here?

Sorry I should have been clearer, I mean how large (physically) is the sensor.

I have Googled it and it is a 1/2.5" (6.4 x 4.8 mm) sensor.

My ancient Canon G6 has a 1/1.8" (7.144 x 5.358 mm), so it is impressive that they have got 16MP out of a smaller sensor than my 7MP G6 uses.

What would be ideal for me is an bridge camera that uses an APS-C sized sensor.

I presume the file gets compressed when it is uploaded to Photobucket.

I was reading one of the reviews and it stated that in EXR mode it uses as many pixels as it needs to which makes no sense to me.  As long as the photos turn out fine then that is all I care about TBH.  The days of me spending ages taking photos are long gone!

A dodgy dealer kind of chap in our midst has offered my a Nikon D50, which I shall be accepting!  My dad has a D50, which I have used a couple of times now and really do like it, so it should be a great entry to DSLR photography for me.  Result!

^^^ Is it dented in one corner?

ah, so to get hi-res pics on here you go the bucket route not the attach file route?

^^^ Another way is to use a program like Dropbox, you can save them in your "public" folder and then publish a link to them on here.

I will PM you a link.
PhilD

^^ cheers! Will have a play later.

Perhaps wait until you have installed Dropbox?

PhilD

^^ you need something to do whilst it's installing?
