new 997 turbo0-100mph in 7 seconds, now I promise you the last thing the turbo needed was to be faster....a bit more sorted on the handling side sounds promising but any improvement in the engine noise ?
Having owned one I always thought they were despite being an incredible car the worst 997,the regular car was fast enough and sounded so much better, the gt3 was just far more involving, however after experiencing the new range I now think that for a daily drive the turbo is the best car Porsche make...yes a gt3 is more fun in certain circumstances but it is too tiring as a daily drive compared to the turbo. The regular cars are now too neutered and just feel like slower versions of the turbo, and the turbo has that truly incredible acceleration which will always bring a smile to your face,or a stain to your underpants.

It does sound as though this new Turbo is a very well-sorted car.
I think if I ever did have a 911 it'd be either a GT3 version or a Carrera 4S, but I do have a real hankering after this Turbo and I'd love a go in one.
I think it represents the sensible limit for quick cars. It's not stupidly expensive compared to some cars, it's not too big and wide, you can see out of it fairly well, it's pretty good in all weathers and they usually don't catch fire or break down a lot!

I still think the GT3 is the pick of the range; it's as useable as any 911 not fitted with PDK or Tiptronic, but far more involving than a regular Carrera. The Turbo is certainly a fine (and very fast) car, but if that was what I wanted I would probably go for a Panamera instead.

I must admit that the Turbo really doesn't do it for me. Sounds like a fantastically capable car, though.

disagree with that, very noisy and that clutch would be hard work in traffic..but for a blast it is easily the best car porsche make....I just prefer the turbo for a daily drive.

Each to their own, I suppose, but I've driven mine for over two years without ever feeling it's too hardcore. The clutch is heavy when the car is new, but it eases with use.

you probably have stronger legs than me,seriously I have weird hamstrings which get messed up from clutches...(like ryan giggs..funnily enough I play football just like him as well)...I think my next car will have to be auto or something as my left hamstring is really messed up.

Bad hamstrings certainly wouldn't help, though as I say, the clutch does ease with use. Interesting point regarding the new Turbo - according to the video on the Autocar website, it'll have proper right-up and left-down paddles for PDK.

Translation: you now have a left leg twice the size of the right.

was more thinking of the sublime skills, balance and acceleration, but you're probably closer to the truth.

Points at my post in the new cars section mentioning this fact.
About time as well, even the Porsche drivers on the driving day all commented on how bad the button system was,I hated the buttons, just felt so weird.

Is 7.0 seconds 0 to 100 mph a Porsche time or a Magazine road test time ?

If you pay extra for them. As standard it still has the hated buttons on the wheel. Steve Sutcliffe, in his column, says that when they originally developed the PDK set up, the engineers asked Walter Rohrl what he thought. He described the buttons as 'shit' but Wendelin Wiedeking had hated the paddles on a Ferrari that he'd driven so 'under no circumstances will a Porsche have paddles'. So the PDK is £2552 extra and paddles another £271.

I'd still take the version with a proper manual gearbox!

Franki have you tried to do something about your hamstring? Autos are just wrong.

The short throw option makes it the best gearchange in the world.

It does - I love the change on mine.

S'funny - I'm still not sure whether I'd actually like the short throw gearbox. It does tend to polarise opinion. I've never driven a Porsche with that gearbox, but when changing gear in such a car in the showroom I find the clutch a bit heavy and the gearlever a bit heavy and notchy - whereas I think the standard cluch and gearlever action is utterly delightful.
The standard gearlever is a bit on the long-throw side but I don't mind this at all, the changes can still be made in a fast and slick manner.
If I could get a GT3 on PS2s rather than Cups or PZero Corsas, and equipped with the non-sport shift, I'd probably prefer it to the version that Porsche offers.
Perhaps I'm just not hardcore enough!

Yeah, you big jessie! Man up and get the short shift and manly clutch...

I've not driven a 911, but I think the new turbo would be my favourite version. However, you can't argue with the value for money you get with the GT3.

? there is no differenc e in the clutch weight, the short throw just has unit fitted that shortens the throw action, porsche charge you about £6million for this option ,but you can buy a diy kit for about £70 .
Now the clutch is heavy in the gt2 and gt3 (well to me it is) ,but the turbo is as light as a regular 997 with a normal throw action.

I agree - the only short shift I've sat in was on the GT3 and the clutch is certainly heavier on that IMO than it is on the regular cars.
And I've got very strong legs from all the running I used to do!

Nah, it's only the left leg.
It would be interesting to see how the fuel consumption of a Turbo would compare to a GT3 when driven at autobahn speeds.

Because of the torque curve on the turbo you would have to work the gt3 much harder to achieve the same speeds surely ?
