Ooh...

I remember Mazda doing a similar one based on the Mk1, back in the 90s.

I love this, though the chances of being "Massa-ed" in it are quite high.
Clunes

The first pic reminds me a little of the Jag concept they did some years back...must have a quick google - twas a nice looking car

How extra-light? 5 kg's?

It's not just a fabric roof lighter. there are the door handles and the mirrors, too!

This has to be the most pointless exercise I've seen in motoring: removing the roof from a convertible. FFS!
woof woof

The chances of that car being made and actually being that car are zero.

That's worth repeating, zero.
BeN

It is indeed, alan. It's just a design exercise for the MX-5's 20th anniversary.
Mark

A pointless exercise. They need to move on.
DarthBalls

Cool but pointless!

Doesn't seem to have harmed Porsche or Lambo (effectively, since the Murcielago roof seems to be a pointless thing).

It's as pointless as VWs concept of shoving the W12 engine in the back of the Golf.

Lets just applaud Mazda for doing it and look forward to someone in California taking the snips to their own car.

You'll have somebody's eye out with that.
Twelfth Monkey

I know the MX5 is a lauded car, but I find it utterly uninteresting.  An Elise, please.

I completely agree, Twelfth. Although I also feel much the same about the Elise (unfortunately for me).

Shame Mazda couldn't have plugged in one of their small V6 lumps (1.8, 2.0) back in the day.
Twelfth Monkey

Yep.
