Monumental mileage day

The day has finally arrived:

Still not missing a beat. Well, a wheel bearing is on its way out and it still clonks over small imperfections, but otherwise still beasting along.
Michael

I like that you've photoshopped the speedo out the way in order to capture the mileage. Impressive stuff, shows how good cars are these days.
Twelfth Monkey

At my present rate, I'll catch you up in 2038!
Martin

That is a decent mileage and good to hear it's still going strong.

Indeed.

My wife at the present rate will catch up in 2116.
Martin

Even at my rate, I'll never catch you up.
Blarno

It's not only the most total mileage I've had on a car, it's also the most miles I've ever covered in one car - 50k.

Not bad for 2 and a half year's work and a true testament to the rugged reliabilty of the Ford 2.0 TDCi engine when driven properly.
Blarno

Photo was taken by my passenger, by the way.

good of her to do this for you mid BJ...
Blarno

Him....
BeN

PhilD

of course, standard apprentice induction stuff.
Blarno

Somebody had to hold the wheel and take the photo whilst I took a phonecall and sipped a JD and coke...
scamper

Think my Mondeo had done 148k when I got rid of it.  Most of the real issues including wheel bearings had been taken care of so think it could have just run and run.
Blarno

As part of Operation Not Giving A Shiny Shit Anymore, I decided to paint the wheels gloss black. Because I can.

They look alright from 20 feet away, but that's to be expected when they're scabbier than a council estate chip shop and painted by hand.

.....using a tin of Dulux ?
Blarno

Near enough.
PhilD

Poor car, deserves better.

Martin is now considering making you an offer
Impressive stuff, well done that car.

A quick search of AT tells me that there are only 18 red BMW 5 series for sale, and only 2 of those are estates. Neither has black wheels (you will not be surprised to learn).

Unless you're suggesting I put it out of its misery?

My diesel estate has silver wheels and I wouldn't have it any other way, black wheels don't really work on hatches/saloons/estates imo.

However, black spokes with a silver rim....a classic Porsche combo.
Frank Bullitt

I do think the Mondeo would look like Martin's Boxsters long-lost brother if you put them alongside each other. Perhaps a 535d and Mondeo swap is in order?
Blarno

Just remember that the next owner of this car is going to be a large electromagnet attached to a crane.
PhilD

I don't think anyone was worried about it's re-sale value Blarno!
Blarno

Good, because it's heading into negative figures!
PhilD

You need to give it a more deserving send off!
Blarno

A Viking funeral? I live near plenty of rivers and it won't be hard to cobble a reft together.
Giant

When does making mods that actively worsen the look of the car become 'ratlook'? #secretdubber
PhilD

You'd probably end up in all kind of environmental trouble for that, I was thinking more like a donation to a nearby army...

... or the local Fire Brigade (after all, it's the right colour for them) ?

When little bro's Golf reached the end of a long and hard life he donated to a charity/college who were teaching teenagers basic mechanics so they had a skill/trade. Seemed like a good end for a car to me.
Blarno

College kids will have their work cut out with Postbox!

Not if they are setting fire to it it isn't!

Right kids this Mondeo has been barried up - your project for the term is to return it back to factory
Blarno

It deserves something better than being cut up by firemen, for sure.

A workmate is a graffiti artist, he's going to decorate some of it for me.

Blarno's getting a Banksy Mondeo.
Roadsterstu

I saw a very tidy looking Mondeo Ghia estate up for sale near me for 850 quid yesterday. 850 quid.
Blarno

I've said it before and I'll say it again, as far as VFM goes, you can't really beat a Mondeo Mk3.
