Mercedes-AMG E43 4Matic

I know the one size fits all styling of Mercedes is boring but it comes together on the E class quite beautifully. Adding the AMG touches shoots the desirability through the roof.
Want.

I really like that. A lot.  Lovely interior, exactly how I'd spec it.

An estate version would suit me perfectly, although I can't help thinking that I would really want the V8 sound effects which should accompany a proper AMG badged model.

Put some silver wheels on that and it is the perfect Q car.

I agree that from the C, E and S, the Merc styling works best on the E. Also that car looks understated. Which is such a rarity nowadays.

So that's not a C, then?

Well, that is quite nice. But another one to join the ever-confusing Mercedes line-up.

But to the point of boring (looks)? In truth a criticism of many E classes, including my own  W211.

The CLS on the other hand is sex on a stick.

Historically the E-class size car is the meat and drink Mercedes: a zillion taxis, umpteen thousand sign-written T-models for small businesses and the default choice for the senior ranking manager. It's not supposed to be exciting, flashy or sleek: it's supposed to start first time every time, be comfortable, spacious, safe and worthy with all the necessary accoutrements a modern car requires.

This seems to fit the bill quite well. I just hate that grille on anything other than a sports model: the good old upright grille is so much more statesmanlike.

At the same time though there's probably a growing number of current AMG customers who can't quite justify the running costs of a V8 any more so this makes sense for them and should still sound good. There's probably also a number of E class diesel customers for whom the leap up to a full fat petrol V8 is too much but have the budget to go for a petrol V6. It's a business model that seems to work well for Audi with their S and RS ranges.

The Mk 1 CLS was absolutely that good. In fact in black with a big V8 it always looked like what Darth Vader would drive were he to visit earth.  But the Mk 2 has never looked so resolved to me. It lost some of the sleekness when they put the new Merc grille on it and the back is more bulbous too, especially the rear arches.

It's a quick taxi.

Looks great and I'm equally a fan of the C-class especially the coupe which I understand is rather polarising.

I'm not convinced by the interior however when I sat in one. The twin screen setup doesn't shout premium to me but then I am a bit old school but they do offer a great number of interior colours and specs. For me the new Volvos are where it's at in terms of great cabins.

It is encouraging seeing six cylinder petrol models still being launched that slot below the full-fat performance models. The article says that UK sales will start in September, but considering they still havenít bought the C450 to the UK, I wouldnít be surprised if itís not a great priority. The S6/550i market is unfortunately tiny. This E43 is seemingly a replacement for the E500 and Mercedes stopped selling that a few years ago in the UK.
Nelson

desirability and want of the estate version of is through the roof with this.

It would one of the hardest decisions if I was faced with a choice of this or the new S4 Avant with all the interior options specced, both have truly stunning interiors...gosh, that's a hard decision

That looks quite nice. I like Mercedes' newer styling, the current E is just too ugly and angular, and having been in a few (yes, taxis all) I was never impressed with the quality. The 5 series spanks it on every level, but the new one looks a lot better to my eyes.

Why is the C450 AMG still not here? I am eagerly awaiting the 340i/XE V6S/C450 AMG/Audi S4 group test....
